hi all,
i cant help myself, starting another one before finishing the others haha

ive had this kit sitting around for a while, but only just received some donor parts for the build so its sparked some interest again.

its based on this, its a great kit for this type of build.
everything fits really well as usual. i'm enjoying building Aoshima kits lately...

this will just be a fun build, the way i want it, i havnt chosen a colour or decal set yet, but the std kit came with a few TRD decals etc...

progress wont be super fast on this but i hope you like it.

it will be built as per instructions in terms of bodywork, with a few very minor changes.....

like shaving off the silly strips on the doors.... what track car leaves that on right?

was...

now....
(over fenders cover the ends, so i didnt bother going all the way..)

being a race car kit, it came with striped interior... nice detail too.

and a good roll cage

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/P9282310_zps3e8c8090.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/P9282310_zps3e8c8090.jpg.html)

watanabe's with 'semi slick' rubber.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/P9282315_zpsa9136d12.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/P9282315_zpsa9136d12.jpg.html)

test fitting the over fender kit, they needed slight filling where they originally fitted over the door moldings that i shaved off.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/P9282306_zps2b8200ee.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/P9282306_zps2b8200ee.jpg.html)

and here are the donor parts from another aoshima AE86.
it was from one of the initial D versions.

main component from this sprue was the strut brace...

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/P9282312_zps308918cb.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/P9282312_zps308918cb.jpg.html)

and now the main part i wanted! the engine!!!
there were many customization options with the donor kit,
having the standard 4AG engine, plus a 16v chromed valve cover, equal length extractors and even a 20v head/valve covers complete with quad throttle bodies and an open timing belt arrangement (no cover over the timing belt
....I can see myself building the engine first :D

hi all
progress was slowed on this as i wanted to make copies of the engine for a few other ae86's i have to build.

i'll be getting back into this one now i have gone through the molding process of all the parts i needed to copy.

i'm just not sure what color to do this one.....:dunno:
i will be using the TRD logos etc, so im thinking of a 2 tone in TRD colours, but im undecided still.

I was going to make more progress on this one when i realized that the hood was warped, not sure if it came like that or if it happened in storage.
either way i could not get it back to its original shape, so i had the make one.
luckily i have a few of these in my stash, one of which had a vented hood so i made a cast of that one.
so even though it was a setback, im happier with this part than the original.

it turned out quite well i think.
I'm only new to resin casting so its been a learning curve, but im getting there now, thanks to those on this forum who have answered my many questions!

i still need to cut the headlights out so i can instal the pop up type from this kit, which the donor one does not utilize.

as mentioned, i also made copies of the engine, so i'll be using a resin one in this model.
I have a choice of which exhaust manifold to use, the standard one fits to the exhaust that is molded to the chassis, the equal length extractors i will need to trim the existing exhaust back a bit, i'm undecided at this stage.

I also made casts of other desirable parts such as the strut brace, as well as all the other engine bay items which i will need for my other aoshima ae86's

i think i will go with the 20v head :iceslolan

These kinds of cars are not my cup of tea. But I love what you are doing with this kit.

The quality of your castings looks fantastic.

Sincerely

Pascal

well thanks Pascal, I appreciate it.

The castings arnt perfect but absolutely good enough for a build like this, as i said im learning the craft as i go :)
i spared no expence on buying the best quality silicone and resins to avoid any problems there, so its only my skills that cam be blamed if anything is substandard.

how do you mean 'these types of cars'? Japanese?
just curious

I'm a massive motorsport fan, no matter what the car, so most of my builds are from some sort of motor racing.
this will be i guess you could call it a club level inspired race car, which is what i mainly see locally...

...

I prefer cars that have curves and soft lines.

A car like the one you're building is more shaped like a box and is squared (is that a word ?).

I also like cars that have differente colors (like the Rothmans 962 that I'm building).

Round shapes, curves, colors, ...

Guess it has something to do with my mid-life crisis :p

no you're quite right Pascal, the mid 80's were the years of the boxy cars! thats for sure.

Great build subject GTRfan

I was wanting to build one of these too - it reminds me of the early 80's cars that ran in SCCA club racing in the USA back in the day.

Do you know which Aoshima kit has all these donor parts?? engine - strut bar - etc??

I have the Aoshima kit like the one you showed the picture of at the beginning. Can you PM me a picture of the "Donor" kit? also how much do you want for a set of the resin donor parts you made molds for?

If I can't find a donor kit here in the USA cheap - then my only option is to talk sweet to you and try to buy a set of the parts - lol

I'll keep watching your thread - really like this one - I owned a 1988 Mitsubushi Starion ESI-R 2.6L turbo charged car until 1998 when I had to give it up to my son-in-law, because I was paralyzed in an accident. The Starion was the most fun 4 cylinder car I have ever owned. I wish I could find an unmolested automatic version here in the USA.

Let me know of the donor kit and resin parts GTRfan

Cheers
John

hi John,

yes, they also raced both the ae86 and starion here in australia in the 80's (group A) and obviously still see them at race tracks at club level racing today.

i'll send you a message about the donor parts so not to clog up the thread with discussion.

Ive been working on this one again.
(sorry about the orientation of the pics, the editing software doesnt seem to be working for me right now)

first the resin bonnet needed a little bit of attention and cut out headlight cover as this kit has separate ones. Im probably going to replace the molded in bonnet pins with PE ones too.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/20160531_231942_zpsc11xtbh9.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/20160531_231942_zpsc11xtbh9.jpg.html)

I have also modified the suspension. It had some parts to lower it from the kit but i replaced those with my own (seen in white styrene) and also cut the metal spring a little. So now it is lowered a little and has a bit of negative camber

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a558/Benk01/models/20160531_232003_zpstoxhnp33.jpg (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/Benk01/media/models/20160531_232003_zpstoxhnp33.jpg.html)

Also, this is the roll cage that comes in the kit, i was impressed. i dont see any need to make any changes.
