ok....starting a new thread here ! (another??? yes yes yes...:iceslolan)

This time is a real easy job. Nothing serious. U know when u plan something nearly straight from the box, without any problem..maybe just changing something little. Exactly!

In my collection I miss a very nice porsche of the past. Technocally she was a Group S car (never born cathegory),developed from B group rally cars for track porpouses. This was coming from her sister 959.

Tamiya made it years ago.....but surely is a very nice and detailed kit :iceslolan:iceslolan:runaround:. At least I need it to be proportionally correct, and YES!! I finally found that nice decals from HLJ to make it in a real nicer and aggressive livery than that boring white car suggested by tamiya: the famous Rothmans car used in le mans 1987.
Isnt she lovely??

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9yej5TPogN8/U85J41b76mI/AAAAAAAAgO0/x1jADr81fz4/w1022-h701-no/Rothmans%2B961.jpg

so..ready to rush. decals we have..maybe rims we can find (u know how much I love bbs ones..) and we are ready.

it will be a real quick and pleasure assembly -paint-decal model ready to display...

:iceslolan:iceslolan:iceslolan...and then we go..

thank u Chris.
I am sure this time will be no putty..no sanding, no cuts, no saw...I am sure..I feel it. JUST decalize it and make it nice. real nice car...

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you .

thank u Rene !

but now i wonder...hum hum...why also Rene now says there is a needing of a extra body to make this SIMPLY conversion??... :icon16:
'

And then desperation comes....:crying::crying:..ok..the 1987 car is MUCH wider than the 1986 tamiya model.

and also tamiya model itself...thats just a Tamtech body:wtf:
so few details...clear parts already moulded.

I just wanna build the nice car with the decals sheet..It looks so nice and cool.

but I will never give up !
The car is too cool, and after the 959 paris dakar done by Roman is one of the nicest 911īs family car u can ever build.
SO we have to fix this.
Marstrand is Always the best inspiration Point to make such kinda models. as Always, when I get in modelling panic, I take a Quick run around my Island and watching the North sea I feel the Power in my saw ....

ok then. After some Days of disappointing about the big differences between the 1987 car I wanna build and the 1986 car provided (basically) by tamiya,I started masking the clear parts to rework the body

I holed the front lights mouded together with the body.the model was very basical. thatīs probably the reason why it is Always quite cheap on ebay

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MdJRn5z4h1Q/VAjA7j4emII/AAAAAAAAiB4/LWEaPVrCpVs/w394-h701-no/WP_20140831_001.jpg

parts of the modifications will include the different shape and size of the rear Engine air intake, the removal of the cap fuel filler door on the right side, and the resizing of the Place for rear lights

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5iw_-jlh4N0/VAjA8sHLMCI/AAAAAAAAiCk/1QwehGzvQl8/w394-h701-no/WP_20140831_003.jpg

One of the first works to do to this body is to open the side vents inside fwd fenders. Plastic is real thick. Think anyway tamiya got the shape of the vehicle.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PX-qxj73C94/VAjA9LJ2qyI/AAAAAAAAiCU/zFrelu6ps78/w394-h701-no/WP_20140831_004.jpg

then time to indrease the front end.In all pictures this version is much more larger and squared on its top.U must be careful not to loose the front shape of lights, so similar to 993 following serie, ispired itself to the 959

I have the same project (for the moment only in my mind) combining in the technical part (chassis, engine and suspension) with the 959 kit, but your evolution and steps to achieve a perfect body will be a great motivation.

thank u so much for the kind words guys. Glad u like my messy stuff :D

I dont plan to make copies of it. as at today, I didnt find any serious caster for the body I already did (dino, rsr 3.0,458 gt2/3). for now it will remains again a one off model, as usual.

make a full detail model of the 961 would be a great idea. Think the engine was btw different from 959, coming 961 directly from 956/962 unit.

Paolo - Love your continuing work on Porsches! I am planning to mimic your RSR build soon. I also have this 961 on my list to do. Would you mind posting the dimensions on the width of the body that you are working to? New width at front and rear fenders and the width at the mid-section under the doors. Thanks! Chuck

Paolo, great work! I definitely would like to have detailed kit of 961! I had die-cast Bburago die-cast model in my childhood and would to make it detailed in 1/24 scale :-)

thank u Costantine, we surely need to talk about that.

The 906 is here also....I love to start many different projects. This cause maybe in the meanwhile I can fix for some copies and/or cause I like the idea to really have everything ready to complete such special subjects. As far as u all know, all my models are waiting something extra, absolutely no hurry in that. M3 and 458 gt3 needs proper wheels, the rsr need some minor extra fitments.
As said no hurry....just I like to see all theme coming up together :D

Also very useful for me is to see what i do after some weeks/months.This makes much more easy to note mistakes or forgotten parts that during the building excitment often are not noted. As far as u wellknow, the worst judge is always youself

09-09-2014, 09:05 PM
Paolo - I don't want to sound stupid, but what type of Tamiya putty - there are many kinds - can you show a picture of it?? I have Tamiya white putty but that is too thin to build up thick like you have on the fenders.
Thank you
John

lovegt40
09-10-2014, 06:09 AM
it is the most ordinary grey, basical putty from tamiya. White putty is much better. Mine one was a leftover just. It become quite dry and old, but for those massive works is ok.

Use the white one,if you can. It is absolutely better.

Now the first layer of primer on the body. the second oil cap filler hole in fwd bonnet is still to come in the correct position (different from 1986 car)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IQHER-issJ0/VAjBCt8jHBI/AAAAAAAAiD8/Oa-3QgZT4OE/w1214-h701-no/WP_20140903_016.jpg

It is possible to finish this 1987 version also with rims provided in the original Tamiya box.
However I prefer some BBS ones, and the choiche will be between latest tamiya 934 ones and 935 ones, after cleaning theme stripping paint and drilling theme from inside to open rim details

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nVevfOmImhE/VAjA_6yfrYI/AAAAAAAAiG0/5sQREzHOAww/w1248-h701-no/WP_20140903_005.jpg

also tyres are a combo from those ones. Rear one is perfect fitting with 935 (as well u can find similar way in the 935 k3 resin model), instead front tyres must be a little bigger than tamiya 935 one.
here below some test

Great work. Do you plan to cast it?

lovegt40
10-17-2014, 03:43 AM
still dunno, cuse I find the caster for some of my bodies, but for now would prefer to cast some works like the 3.0 rsr (arriving probably to me next week the first few quantities) and probably the dino 206 (reworked modeller with better wheels).

Dunno really about this 961. Here I see a great interest around her and this is real good. For now the body is nearly complete (still miss some ideas for the 2 rear engine air vents) but have really too many cars in progress right now.
Also the conversion, with such bodywork , will be an easy model for many collectors around. It fits perfectly over the tamiya model and you only need rothmans decals and maybe some BBS wheels, even if real car raced also with OOB rims.

And of course mould such stuff is also quite expensive.
We will see.. :) stay tuned and thank you for the interest.

will surely George. Is a needing in our collection. The model I have here to copy is coming real nice imho. U know I am obsessed with setup in curbside models. This one fits great with correct wheels.Would be nice also to fix for some few, basical nice PE parts, maybe for lights frames, wipers and other small gauges.

will try to find collaborators for this also. It takes time and money, but the dream to make a limited run serie of the dino is the only reason why I didnt start to work on my model as one off only :)

wow how time can pass quick.
When I start build this car was april 2014, and now after nearly 2 years I am here again.

I finally decided how to fix some critical parts on the body. The front lights and arrows will come from a spare trasparent part from tamiya porsche 959 8think the real cars shared many parts together, like indeed even those front lights and arrows, as well as the rear ones).

soon can fix it (tomorrow?) for now just saw away the parts moulded on body.

Cool to note, after some time, how much I want to rework my own model. Some parts dont satisfy me completely, so a big refirbish is in progress right now..

Progress with 961. Forgot how nice and BIG was this racer. Paint it will be a challenge, btw.
Using 959 trasparents I made a frame in plasticard to fit the front holes I made during the work on the body

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DNfE3p8ERcw/VphDDm6FyuI/AAAAAAABMTk/k-nVSevHyz0/s720-Ic42/IMG_3874.JPG

as said that primer created me problems, as well as I recognize ..I dont have any more white paint for my cars... LOL :cwm27: so..no way to proceed in painting the upper body in 961, as well as Mercedes 190 west, as well as Porsche safari martini...so half of my projects are partially stopped.
Was time then to focus on wheels, so I did. Mines are from 935 tamiya (rims and rear tyres,) while front tyres are from 934 jagermeister.
The decal dunlop/denloc are original from tamiya and quite old, so The look is not the nicest Iīve ever seen...no problems, for racing porpouses they are ok.
..and also made some RWB kronbacher wheels. they are from c1, the Idlers decals typical for rwb cars are done by me.

ok, time to update and try to finish also this one.
As said in my little wip on the long tail 962, I had big problems using museum collection decals for rothmans car:banghead:. After so much work on the body, nearly producing it in resin, I arrived at paint and decals and troubles stared.:banghead::banghead:

The srange plastic tamiya used for this model react quite different than ordinary one. It always remains softer and quite oily. Probably is a kinda plastic they used in late 80s for slot racing bodies, before the carbon fiber or resin bodies arrived to race there.:shakehead

Unfortunately as said in the beginning, it is the ONLY 961 available around in 1/24 ,and of course not of the wider 1987 car.
I must probably think of this when I bought decals.
There are no models around, so how can they draw decals for this un-existing model? Of course not, so I understood almost all rothmans main livery colors must be repainted. Unfortunately looking better at what Museum did, I noted too many mistakes in the decals and the overall quality of those was indeed a crap.

here some pics..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4iIn1qt-Dc8/VuCZymh_3zI/AAAAAAABPyk/dIYECZ-g1n0dQOwUEXLUyMgAX50nYDaPwCCo/s512-Ic42/IMG_4665.JPG

this is blue rothmans compared to deeper cartograph 962 decal sheet. Italian printer has a quality BRUTALLY higher than those japanese craps.

here finally glossy and polished....dont care if Calude Haldi become a swedish citizen:screwy:. Sweden is famous to host a lot of strange people, including the ones not asking for citizen, like probably Haldi was in 1987.:grinno:

Now I just want to close her and forget this nightmare as soon as I can.:runaround:

In case you didnt get it..my message is:

STAY AWAY FROM MUSEUM COLLECTION DECAL SET FOR 961 LE MANS 87

I dunno if studio27 ever did those decals, or anybody else. For sure I remember an old die cast metal kit from Bburago about this version, done probably over their 959 (undersized in scale) .
Despite wrong dimesions they were printed by Zanchetti, another good quality italian producer, surely infintely better than what I had to work with here...:runaround::runaround::runaround:

Despite your problems this is looking really good!

On the subject of decals I think the set I have is Tabu - a possible alternative?

tanks John, Thanks Jc,

Jc, I hope really tabu design sheet could be better than mone. From pics iīve seen online seems they re-admitted Claude haldi in swiss confederation, but I cannot see the main Rothmans logo on the front bonnet. Maybe is printed on a smaller second part.
Check anyway before use theme, cause it seems to me also this one has been drawn over the slimmer 86 car.

made some first test with wheels on. really just want to finish it now.

Misteriously there are no side mirrors in tamiya box. Had to build theme from scratch. Evergreen 5x5 strip was used..

Nice work Paolo, The model is looking great. I know you are a fan of the BBS wheels but I think the car looks much more sinister with the black Dymags/Speedline style wheels. I have the Speedline decals from Strata Sports. They are drawn for a wider car. But my fear is that they were drawn by the same person who did them for Museum Collection Micheal Quarterman from UMI Models.

Yepp, I have to admit I love bbs toys (allover, for a period had 4 real ones in my bedoroom , coming from and Honda devastated at the ring..)and I was taken by this pic that looks pretty original:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9yej5TPogN8/U85J41b76mI/AAAAAAAA52k/8DKN5Ydq8WQzOYLBdHR4VfV_DlX6dr7lQCCo/s720-Ic42/Rothmans%2B961.jpg

As well as I note spark, usually quite precise on its models made the same, with such 17" bbs...

http://cdn.snsimg.carview.co.jp/minkara/photo/000/002/468/920/2468920/p3.jpg?ct=14a71280d8af

So I really think they could be historically correct for the car....before the big barbeque on her during the race.
Probably when they refurbished the cadaver burned they replaced the original smaller rims from 1986 car...and the (I think replica) car around in car shows uses the modern bigger spockets bbs so common today...

I've cast a silent eye over this build for quite a while.
I was hoping you'd cast the body as I would have been very interested in buying one lol.
But I think I can manage to make my own following your build and a plan view comparison I have of the '86 vs the '87.
I have to say you have built one fine model there and you are correct in that the mesh BBS wheels are correct for the car. It started the race on them but the driveshafts kept breaking. So as a cure the car was reverted back to the '86 track and fitted with the black 5 spoke Speedline's. Not long after was the unfortunate fire that ended it's race.

I have decals from Speed Line printed by Cartograf for this car. I have no idea how well they will fit the body...but the sheet includes extra decals for if you widen the body for the '87 version.

my tip is anyway to make a paper copy of the sheet you got and try the fittings on the wide body (this car in this livery must be ONLY wide body).
I did with mine and started to cry that day I discover my sheet was a crap. :moppie:Hope your one fits better Brian.

Final detailing on the 961.Mirrors on,just miss the last bonnet PE hooks, front grille and then, I hope she is finished.:sarcasmsign:
The legendary unlucky of car 203 last night was little better here in sweden. A heavy button light from my "brand new porsche museum" showcase fall down on the cars :shakehead. Thanks god I still didnt place mirrors on the 962lh , but 991 was damaged a little in the side mirror.

really this 961 rothmans takes and means unlucky (so nothing done with GTX cathegory, broken driveshaft, taking fire...) :runaround::runaround::iceslolan:iceslolan
