I just bought a 1994 VW Jetta GLS. One of the problems I can't figure out is an electircal problem. Problem is the Radio, Dash lights and A/C fan won't kick on. Is there one Relay that controls this or is there a bigger problem with some cut wires?

I have already checked the fuses and they seem to be find. If anyone has any additional thoughts please let me know. Or if you know of a quick fix.

check the fuses, which should be located under the steering wheel, on the left hand side of the brake pedal, while covered by a panel which can be opened by hand (no screws involved).

once that panel is open, it should have on the inside a bunch of info about the fuses you just uncovered. see if you find the appropriatefuse for the dashboard lights and the heater/blower, then check to see if they're blown (the "wiring" inside the fuse should have no gaps). if there is a gap, replace the fuse(s) with new ones, making sure the new ones have the same rating.

If the same fuse(s) keep blowing repeatedly, you might have a short-circuit somewhere along the wiring. there are diff techniques to pin-point a short-circuit, but since you asked about such minor problems, i kindly sugest taking your car in for an DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) reading.

Since your 1994 GLS was manufactured before 1996 (no shit, eh?), the diagnostic tool can be hooked up to the round-shaped wire harness (it has alotta prongs once carefully opened) located somewhere next to your radiator fans, in the engine compartment.

Some service shops might not (most dont) have that kind of adaptor for the diagnostic tool, in which case you'd be pretty fuhked :)

Good luck

More likely seperate problems. Do any interior lights work, like at the heater controls, etc.... Does the radio come on at all or are you saying its the lights in the radio that don't work? Does the fan come on in any speed, or none of the positions?

i have the same problem in my '94 Jetta GLS. none of my fuses are blown, but the dash lights work like once every month, they will flick on for about 4 mins. on my way home at night. dont know what causes this. the lights at the heater controls DID work until i was messing with the cd player and had the dash torn apart one time, now they dont work either. i have an aftermarket cd player in (thats a whole other story) that only works when the headlights are on and the radio fuse blows all the time. it usually hold a 10 fuse i think, now i have a 20 in and it hasnt blown so everything should be good, but its definitely not...

when you (or whomever) installed the aftermarket CD player, one of the wires got connected to .. the wrong one. do it again

i tried to do it again, and still have it wired wrong. not a wiring genius here i put it back the way it was just so i can have some music when im driving down the road. also if i have something in where the bass hits pretty hard the cd player will shut off, i turn the lights off and on and turn the cd player down a notch and everything is fine, do you think this is because of the miswiring or it has something to do with the speakers not being able to handle that much??
