I've got a 97' E36 with stock 16x7 wheels and 225/50-16 tires.
I'm trying to upgrade to 17x8.5 and run 235/40-17 tires. The people at the Tire Rack say, going to a 235 tire will result in some rubbing.
Anyone out there running 235's on an E36 experiencing rubbing?
The BMW dealer is not recommending going to a 17" wheel.

Hi, on my 97 328i, i went 245 40R17 on 17*7.5". i know for sure without lowering you can go upto max of 9.6" front and back, if you lower than you will rub.
Tirerack will give you the specs for the tire width on the mounting rim according to the rim-width.
