I have a 1992 nissan sentra and im startin a lil project to redo the whole interior, i need some help tho. How do I start? How do I change the carpet? Can i paint the dash? How do i make the seat different colors? Before i put in this really awsome system i want to take care of the interior, please help.

If you can find a place in your area that does custom interiors I would take it to them and find out what you can do yourself so as to save money, and what might need to be done by them or another place that might interest you.

First, try and get what you want to do on paper. Any ideas, wants, don't wants, drawings, that really helps if you go somewhere to help eliminate any confusion. (I created mine using microsoft's paint of the seats, headliner and carpet so when i take the car in for a quote they won't think i'm nuts) If you want a complete do-it-yourselfer done, there are tons of literature at amazon.com, or just go to your local bookstoore and look at (or buy hehe) the how to books. I was absolutely amazed on how much direction there is. Definetly go to an auto upholstery place and ask to see options in fabric, how it can be used and its cost. If they think they will be doing it for you, you'll get a lot more response out of them than just walking in and asking questions...You might be able to buy the leather or whatever from them, or go to a JoAnns Fabric store or another good crafty sewing shop they can order what you need if they don't have it. Painting the plastic parts in your car (i don't know much about your car...but i'm going to assume there is some plastic somewhere in there) Krylon Fusion is a great new product, but has limited colors...if you do it the 'old' way with priming and sanding and stuff there are a lot more color options out there. Or you could cover in vinyl (keep your climate in mind, if you live in a hot dry place then you don't want a material that will easily crack).
Just for instance....i have my design set, although i'm a little nervous about it....and all the extra parts are ordered (floor mats, panel replacements....) When my car goes in for its audio check-up and upgrade (done every 3 years) some parts will be removed for the upholstery to be done as well (actually going to go around today and get quotes and references to figure out who i'll trust the job to)...i have a major feeling the upholstery ppl and the person making the custom tweeter pods for the a-frame are going to get into it hehe...If you have any questions or would like to toss around ideas feel free to email me :) (senaclinton@hotmail.com), I also have a post from a few days ago with what I'm going to do asking for an opinion -is this going to be a disaster?- although not sure how much help I'll be...I'm new at this too

Something I've done before with a friend, is to take off specific panels and to paint them. If you do, a word of advice, use that new paint from krylon that is made for plastic, and of course use primer. It also helps to lightly sand the panel.

Ok dude, this is the 2nd thread in which you've insulted the person's ride. Don't waste bandwidth telling someone you think his car sucks. He never asked anyone's opinion on his car. He asked a question about custom interior work. Tellin him to "sell it and buy something worthhile" does nothing but insult him and make you look like a fool. I am not saying I like or dislike anyone's ride, but I hate it when people make rude-ass remarks completly off topic. Some of us are actually here to share idea's, info, and help out, not to insult people. That being said, here's my response to the thread. I have heard good things about Krylon's Fusion paint and it's ease of use. Never used it though, nor do I know anyone who has. I do know people who have done it this way or simlier, so check it out if you opt for non-krylon fusion paint.

It would help if we knew A) where you are at, and B, how far you are willing to travel. Also, check out the July 2003 Issue of Street Rod Builder. It has lots of stuff on interiors, way to much to list. But among things in there, how to plan, how upholstery is done, materials, sculpting tech, what to buy, 50 interior tip and tricks, an interior planning guide. It will help give you an idea, so check it out. Like half the issue is dedicated to interiors. The magazine's website is www.streetrodbuilder.com

I was wondering how to go about redoing the interior of an older car ('77 Ford Custom 500)
im asking this because my car has bench seats.. but they're ripped to shreds, foam and all :( how could i fix them up, at least so they are comfortable, then i could at least throw seatcovers over em

i have used krylon fusion on my plastics and it turned out great, my interior is black and white, (blue original), it has been bout a 2 week process, my car is striped to the metal, took out every plastic piece u could think of :), now is time to bring frankestein back to life

I use SEM and Plastikote as well as Hi-Tec dyebombs. Its pretty simple to do just make sure you got like 20 very thin fine coats on clean dry vinyl , it adheres different than paint , it fuses into the vinyl kinda like bleeding color into fabric. Works on fabric too , this stuff has the versatility to fuse and become pliable or hard like the vinyl/valor material its made from underneath.

i have a question though? You know when you have a fiberglass enclosure and u don't want to wrap it with carpet, but paint it, what should u paint it with?

Use enamels or laquers but prime the fiberglass first. Watch out when using fiberglass in automobiles , it shrinks slowly over time and cracks/seperates especially if it is exposed to the sun.

Fiberglass slowly shrinks in cars? im right about to glass my trunk... how long would it take before it seperated in there?

Ask in the detailing section mike will let you know all the proper ways to use fiberglass infact theres a fellow doing the same project as you in there right now. They have good advice. Tell mike I reffered you.

That goes for painting the fiberglass as well , he knows whats better paint to use as well , see my paint methods are old fashioned.

Gahh (maybe it's Gaah) leather is very good stuff. They are based out of Southern Cali, don't have any contact info here at home with me, sorry.

Recondition the leather you have , it can take new dye and look brand new unless its worn.
