I'm surprised that BMW is so close to the top - my experience with their cars shows that, while not "bad", they just don't seem to be up to the standards I expect from a German company.
Hummer's position doesn't surprise me at all.

Keep in mind this that this is the number of REPORTED problems in the first 3 months of ownership.

And the results are the MEAN (average) for all models in the company or make. So, if the Maxima has great quality and the Altima doesn't, then Nissan's overall score will suffer. And a poor quality car that sells in large numbers will distort the results.

good point. you can see how one bad apple can ruin it for the rest. i've always found most nissans to be right up there with honda and toyota as far as quality and reliability. but yeah, i was quite disappointed in the craftmanship of the altima when i drove it, good engine(3.5se) but the rest of the car could use some work. i wasn't impressed with the xterra either, but the rest of nissan's lineup is pretty good.

03 Altimas are much improved over 02 or at least mine is.
My Altima is solid and very quiet. The exterior of the car is
flawless.

Its not so much others are getting better, but all but Porsche got worse the last year that were below the average.

i wasnt surprised with bmw's position, we've had near-faultless service from their cars in the past decade

My experience is the opposite. My family's BMWs have gone to 250,000 and 450,000 miles and mine has 210,000 miles and all they've had is regular maintenance, no engine or tranny rebuilds of any kind.
