hey guys.. looking for some help on the car :( it's a 1980 honda civic (semi-auto tranny, 1500).. well i bought it just fine and more recently it's been giving me problems. engine used to run GREAT.. even compared to some new cars  but.. recently it started not idling right. you have to give it gas when you stop or it dies completely and you gotta restart it. kind of embarassing in a semi-auto :( but i was curious.. how could i easily fix this? i'm not sure what the problem is.. i'm going to get a carb rebuild kit soon and hopefully have a go at it.. but if you guys have any ideas they'd be appreciated

if not i may just wait til it dies completely.. then look around for a newer civic engine and start converting :) a b18c5, maybe? wanna race? lol... ah so many dreams.

Before you let it "die" completely, try adjusting the idle mixture screw on the carb. im not sure which one it is on the 1500, but check a manual. also check for vaccum leaks, they will kill your idle .

to adjust the idle there is a know on the back of the carb on the passenger side, clockwise turnes it up. to get at it u will have to un bolt the vaccume huse thing on the bottm of the air cleaner to get at it.

thanks, that will help a lot, i wont b able to start untill next spring/summer, i am in school at the moment far from home with little cashflow. i have alreads put 2 1/4 exhaust, w/o headers mostly because i couldnt find any and even if i did i probally wouldnt want to pay for them :disappoin but i did take the cat out so it made quite a difference. the only other work i have done was basically to keep it running, my head cracked among other thing all at onece last december so i replaced that myslef but didnt have any work done on it but i know someone who will do some work on the head for pretty cheep if i provide parts and remove/install etc.

We purchased a 1980 Honda civic 1.5 GL (hatchback) a year ago and had similar problems to what you have described. Our Honda Civic would die idling or at low speeds. It was finally diagnosed properly as a defective fuel pump after alot of run around. We were told it could be a carburetor problem, a defective fuel pump fuse, a defective distributor. Personally, we inspected the fuel pump pressure and gas input to the carburetor and found an insufficient flow and pressure. After replacing the fuel pump with a brand new one we have had no further problems. Suggest checking the fuel pump pressure and output. It's a very simple test.
