I had a hose come loose on the air conditioning on my 89 Caviler,so of course I lost all of the freon. I tighted the hose and had it ckecked for leaks, there were none.

Iwould like to change from R-12 to R-134a, but am uncertian as to what parts I need to change(if any at all). If I do need to change any parts, is there a later model I could take them off of? Thanks!

Most of the GM cars all they need is the retro kit! Make sure that all R-12 has been removed and put a good vaccum on the system! Then follow the directions with the kit. Make sure you don't overcharge the system. R-134 requires 80% of the R-12 charge.

I put a reteofit kit on and charged it with a R-134a service kit. the other day, according to the instructions.
The compressor would come on, but it didn't cool very well. The next day the compressor would'nt come on when I move the switch to any AC setting. I ran two jumper wires from the battery to the electrical connections, and the clutch engages. According to the color coded gague that came with the kit, the pressure is good(around 28PSI).

Any ideal as to what the problem may be? I need to get it fixed, it's getting hot here in North Carolina.

My first guess would be improper pressure! How much R-134A did you put in and how much R-12 does the car call out for? If you overpressure the system or underpressure it will cause an under cooling condition. Best thing for you to do is go to a shop or dealer and ask them to check it out for you.

Before anyone starts screaming 28psi sounds alittle low off the top of my head. But Low side pressure is not enough to make a good guess on it. I would need low side, high side, ambient temperature and humidity. All of these items would tell you what is wrong also if the needle movement is jerking around or bouncing and so on.

I got it working about 9:00 Eastern time. I bought two 12 oz. cans of R-134a, hooked up my service kit, and started the engine. I then turned the AC an max and slowly opened the valve. After about 1 minute the compressor engaged, but the gauge still read about 28PSI.

I had to change to my second can of R-134a, and charged it to about 40PSI. The label on the car calls for 2.12 LBS of R-12. It now puts out ice cold air.

Thanks to all who replied. I hope somone else finds this info usefull.
