95 monte carlo LS hesitates when giving gas

Hi,I have a 95 Monte Carlo LS it has 53,000 miles and When I go to give it gas it hesitates and the rpm goes down and then I let off the gas and do it slowly and its fine. Any ideas why this is happening all of a sudden. And my check engine light is on.Help please!:smile: Thanks,Lilly
