This is my new project, the Porsche 936 1976 in the black Martini livery, also known as Black Widow.

The car has raced few races with this colors scheme, the last one at Ring, the other teams protested because at night the car was barely visible because of the black livery.

The starting kit is Tamiya Porsche 936 77 and Speedline decals.
The Tamiya kit dates back to 1978, so is simplified and in the chassis and there is space for two batteries.
When I started the project I thought there were fewer modification to do, but the car is beautiful and worth it.
I starts from the body.

Looking at the picture the first thing I notice is that the 936 ‘76 body is shorter than the 936 ’77, fortunately the wheelbase is the same, so is necessary only to shorten the tail.
The front wheel arch need to be reshaped and swelled.
The front hood need to be lowered in the central part while the area around the cockpit has an almost vertical shape that degrees toward the central part of the car.
The central part of the body needs the major modifications, the air scope is replaced by a hump with a fan visible, like the 917. Also the naca ducts have to be moved.
The tail must be shorten, and the rear wing support need to be reshaped.
Finally the rear resembles that of 917/30, and so also the frame need to be modified.

Here the picture of the Tamiya kit:

To lower the front hood I decided to drill a series of holes to separate the central area from the rest of the body.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0872_zps98636438.jpg

I bend the hood with the finger and use Epoxy putty to fill the area. I fill also the ventilation damper.
I glued a stripe of plasticard inside of the cockpit and fill with putty.
In the wheel arch I have glued two plastic stripe useful to give a reference for the final shape.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0874_zps43770e23.jpg

I fill this area with putty, and when I sand the plastic pieces comes through the putty and I will understand if the two arch will be symmetrical.

Let’s move to the tail.
I remove a couple of cm from the kit and fill with putty the rear arch, then I work on the naca.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0882_zps3f3388e4.jpg

The 936 ‘76 has only two ducts in the rear area. I could fill the other two with putty, but I decide to remove the two naca to reuse in the future.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0886_zpse4b73b77.jpg

I modify the rear section to give a 917/30 look at the rear.

Coming back to the front I realize the small duct in the front hood. I shaped it with plastic and putty.
I cut a square section in the hood and glued the duct from the inside. Notice the putty that fill the lowering of the hood.
I also modified the front lights that in the ’76 are shorter.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0913_zps841593b9.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0915_zps9f36569b.jpg

Next step is to work to the air scope…

Richy78
02-12-2013, 02:01 PM
I remove the air scope and replace it with several sheet of plastic, than putty and sand paper until the area was plane. I also fill the fuel cap that need to be moved.
I realize the new rollbar with a plastic rod, bended with a flame.

Now it is time to create the central hump with fan and two ducts.
I use the same technique of the front wheel arch, I glued several layers of plastic until I reach the desired volume. At this point I fill with putty to give the right shape.
I use the naca removed from the tail to realize the two ducts.
This is the result.

Wow Ric, another masterpiece in progress. It is really a serious build up.

Only shame not to cast the body (I surely would take one....already made a post over this car http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1071132&highlight=porsche+936 , simply love it, even more in the black configuration).

The final paint will be then in flat black?

I liked a lot also the prototype shooted in this picture:

keep on postin, this is too nice car.

Thank you Paolo for your support.

Coming back to the kit I am not satisfied with the result, I have to round the blue line and the red one, while the green profile is not correct, the slope needs to be more smooth.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_0961m_zps185540a9.jpg

After sanding and putting I achieve this result.

Finally I work on the front grille and I can consider the body ready for paint.

Some serious scratch building going on here :-)
I like that version of the 936 too.
Before paint i would consider giving that front end another go though. The radiator intake/outlet and lights are not "there" yet.

Hello Jaykay, happy to recive your help.
You are right when you say that the radiator inlet is not ok, I have just notice that in the real car is squared and not triangular like Tamiya kit.:smooch:

Also the lights have to be reshaped.
I have done only minor modification because I would use the kit clear parts.
Now I will reshape it completely and I will vacuform the covers.

Thank you to the other guys for compliments and support!

The Porsche 936 was a race car presented in 1976 by Porsche as a late heir to the Porsche 908, a three liter sportscar model which was outdated by the manufacturer after 1971. Its name came from using a version of the Porsche 930's turbocharged motor, as well as competitive in Team 6 racing.

It was designed to contend in the Globe Sportscar Championship as well as at 1976 24 Time of Le Mans under the Team 6 system, which it won both of. Framework 002 with #20 won with Jacky Ickx and Gijs van Lennep won Le Guys, while the #18 chassis 001 of Reinhold Joest and Jürgen Barth had motor failing. It distributed these wins with its production-based brother, the Porsche 935 which won in Team 5. The start top, two seater spyder was operated by an air-cooled, two-valve 540 hp (403 kW) single-turbocharger flat-6 motor with 2140 cc, or the comparative of 3000 cc such as the 1.4 disability aspect. The spaceframe chassis was depending on the 917, with many of the areas also arriving from the car. In the first trips, the Martini Racing car was still dark, and the motor protect behind the move bar was smooth. The huge problem and the air box above the motor was fixed onto the car later in the period. It is not for the air consumption of the turbocharged motor, nor to chill of the air-cooled motor itself, but instead mainly used for the intercooler.

Hi,

with all due respect to your work and skills, the result does not convince me yet.

Why to hell they have not taken the Mitsuwa kit? It is available on ebay for 40-45€. Although this is not entirely correct in shaping, but relatively easy to corrected and better than your current results.
Regarding the radiator intake/outlet Jaykay has already written something. There are still some other things.
The naca ducts behind the cockpit are too narrow and the distance between them is too great.
The side fins of the taller wing are much too short, therefore the fuel cap on right side is too far back.
The curvature of the body above the rear wheels should be stronger.

Please don't misunderstand, I do not want your work to make bad.

But I can not understand their approach.

Regards, Jenner

(I hope there are no misunderstandings, my english is not the best.)

You've done a lot of great work and your model is looking fantastic however if you read threw the thread here that a link was also posted above,,,,,

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1071132&highlight=porsche+936

,,,,,,,,,you will find my comments regarding this version of the 936 and the version you based your build on. The Tamiya kit that you based your build on has a longer WB then 936-001 and it also is has a much narrower track width. Both of these thing should be corrected for a properly preportioned model though it seems a little late now to try and do this. I sure hope your decals fit correctly as I have the resin body that they are intended for and it is much wider then the Tamiya 936 body.

Good luck

Hello Jenner,
thanks for your comment, don’t worry about critics, are welcome!
I haven’t found a Mitsuwa kit, so I try to modify the Tamiya kit.

You are right for the side fins, I will extend them and I will move the fuel cap.

Also the curvature of the body have to be stronger (is similar to 917 shape) but in this case is difficult to achieve this result without cut both side of the body.

For what concern the naca ducts behind the cockpit I don’t agree.
In the Mitsuwa kit the naca are located as you suggest, in the real car, instead, they seems really different as shape and location.
Is this picture I use as reference for my work.

Hi Richy,

apologize that I answer only now.

You are right, the naca the air inlets are at the Mitsuw kit not entirely accurate.
I originally used this picture as reference.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt97/dtcollins/PORSCHE%20936/936black.jpg

There, it looks as if the ducts are wider and are closer together than in your model . They border there almost to the red stripes in the middle.

Hey Jenner, looking at various photos of the real car in this thread, there appear to be different configurations of these ducts. Perhaps they varied by race or just car variant but I think it would be hard to assert Richy is wrong unless we know which specific car he is replicating :)

the car in Riccardo's pic is different from your one Jenner (look at front end air vents).

As said before it is the same car taking costantly evolutions, so probably many parts are different from race to race.
It really depends form what version is he doing. Also to me the black car looks much more wider than the 936, but is also probably the body color that gives a different idea too.
curious to see the progress btw :)

better to be told now, it is always harder to alter when its painted and decalled. just cant have too many reference photos. it is always a problem when modelling a specific car, you just have to pick a date when the real thing was photographed and stick to it. you can end up with an original front and a back end off a car that was seen 20 years later at goodwood after it was restored.

Richy78

I come back with some progress.
As some of you suggest, I reshape:
the radiator intake/outlet;
the lights;
the side fins;
the rear wheel arc;
the naca ducts.

Starting fron the fins I have exteended them with a sheet of plastic.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_1105_zps241f84cb.jpg

According to my references I have closed the wheels arch. (in some race they where open like the 917/30 for example, at the ring they are closed and painted red)

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_1106_zpsedc1801c.jpg

As you can see I apply a red tape on the body, it has the same width of the red stripe on decal. Then I create the reference for positioning the naca using Tamya tape.

To recreate the naca ducts I use a sort of punch.
I create the shape of the duct with a 2 mm plastic sheet, than apply a sort of handle.
I dig the body with my Proxxon and fill this hole with epoxy putty.
Then I use the punch to create the naca shape.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_1109_zps756ae061.jpg

Here the result

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/R78/IMG_1127_zps47daef8d.jpg

Then I try also with the duct cover and the central fan just to have an idea of how it looks like.

Finally I have reshaped the radiator inlet.

Thanks for watching

Hello Richy78,

it now looks great with the modifications, excellent work.

I do not almost dare to write, but you should check the position of the fuel cap on left side. I think they should be positioned slightly further forward. Look on first picture in this thread, it is located close to the door panel line.

freakray and lovegt40 - I agree with you that it modifications between races.
The position of the naca ducts or their covers is, however, on all pictures in this thread equal - near the red line and approximate about the inner blue line.
Also, the distance between the front and rear ducts being about the same (look picture in bird view).

Since I can fully agree with rgriffs - better to be told now, in the first version would get Richy problems with the decals, then the front ducts have located on the outer blue line.

Thank you guys for your support.
The decals are really fragile due their thickness. Probably are made by two layer of white and a layer of color, to cover the black base, but this make it impossible to conform to the body.

I realize that the only way to fold the decal without cracking is to soften before they slide from the support, so I dip the decals directly into Microsol.
Of course is difficult to move the decal on the body surface, you have to position the decal almost as the first shoot, but this method works well.

I can not use the kit light covers because I change the shape of the headlights.
So I decide to vacuform the new covers.

To create the master I put some clingfilm on the body and I fill the headlight seat with Tamiya epoxy putty.
When the putty has cured I protect the body with masking tape and sand it down.

I prepared a small frame with wood and I fixed a clear sheet.
I heat the frame with the clear in the owen and I press the master on it.

It isn't a proper vacuforming but it works.

It all looks great - what's the technique for the seat material?

Hi Jordan, the seat is paint with Tamiya X-1 and then with a coat of flat clear.
I use the airbrush to spray the clear, the trick is to make sure that the paint arrives already dry on the seat.

I leave the paint thick and increase the pressure of the compressor (usually 1.2 bar).
I increase also the distance between the seat and the airbrush (30-40 cm).

I give the body a coat of 2k automotive paint and then a coat of semi-gloss clear.
Finally I put togheter body and frame.

It is time to improve the front lights.
I make several copies of MFH Ferrari F40 bulbs using Prochima rubber for the mould and resin for the pieces.
I painted it gloss black and use Kosutte to give the chrome finish (thanks to my friend Alessandro that gave me as a bit.

The model is finish.
I have used Renaissance rims that are correct for all the 936 without venting discs.

Supremely good modelling of an unusual subject. Been a great pleasure to follow this thread and the use of some unusual methods like the "stamps" used for the intakes and headlights. Well done and keep up the excellent standard.
