Hey guys I need any insight/advice in this possible purchase

I'm looking to purchase a car. My dad knows an auto mechanic very well. They've known each other for a long time.

It turns out the mechanic has a 2000 Honda Accord 4 door sedan with 178,000 miles on it. 2.3L 4-cyl. Automatic. I don't know which model it is but it has leather seats and automatic chair mover with the button in the front?lol. I'm guessing it's EX. Grey color, other things seem to work fine.

The mechanic recently replaced a new timing belt and instilled new transmission oil. He recently got the car (which is true), promised to look over every major equipment, and will fix them. My father has a good amount of knowledge. He looked it over carefully and thinks it's in a good condition

He quoted the car $2,500 plus $400~500 for any repair that will be done in the few days that he will be inspecting the car. So total $3,000. He also promised to fix any major problem in the future (about 1 year) without any labor cost, will charge only the equipment price (this can be trusted with pretty good credibility)

What do you guys think? Is $3,000 for the conditions above a good deal? My dad has much faith in this guy so I just wanted to hear objective opinions from car experts like you guys. Any response is appreciated. Thanks! :)

I give this post 100% green light to purchase based on the fact your dad has known the seller a long time and to boost he's a mechanic.

Had you posted a friend of your dad's is selling a car not being a mechanic there would have been some red flags to overcome. If my memory serves me right there were some problems with the tranny but I think it was with the 6cyl only, but hey this car has registered 178K so the matter don't come into play.

You will be taking the car for a test drive and I feel confident the mechanic will have made sure all is well mechanically, but just to make sure nothing has been overlooked check this link that will explain how I tested cars during a test drive. http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html

Thank you for your reply Ray.

Do you think the fact that it's been driven 178K miles, I can purchase with pretty good assurance that the transmission failure problem (at least due to the recall cause for this model, not natural wear down) will not occur? I actually found out that it's V6 EX model as well so the possible transmission problem was the only thing that's holding me back.

I also looked at your website. Very useful and beginner-friendly. I'll def. try that on this car. Thanks again!

If there ever was a problem with the tranny it would have happened long before 178K

Don't be scared just because a few out of thousands had recalls, if you were buying a car one or two years old then I would be somewhat concerned, let us know how the test drive went and if you purchased
