Hi everyone, started this a few days ago,

It's tamiya's 1/12 scale kit, and I plan a lot of modifications. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png

The goal is to build the most correct example of chassis 935/77 ch. 004 (car #1) as I can, so far this is has been a bit of a challenge cause the car crashed then when M.I.A........... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.png

so far not much work has gone on, I'm waiting for a bunch of part to show up, but I did start on the brakes....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/39c14920.jpg

Well first of I read on some other forums that the stock calipers don't fit on the brake disk when you have the photoeched on them, but,all you have to do is a tiny bit of sanding to thin them out.

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/b6842ae8.jpg

then you got to cut of the mounting points so that they slide over the caliper brackets, other wise you cant fill in the seam...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/3941b4b3.jpg

then everything was drilled out for some turned parts, also the seams where filled with some tamiya putty, these parts where cast in 1:1 and conveniently the casting seam is right on the joint in the model, so i shaped the putty to look like overfill in a metal mold

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/585dfda3.jpg

I've got brake bleeders to fill in later, once it's all painted...

more soon....

next off is the alternator,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/0514d602.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/dcbec37c.jpg
(sorry about the phone it was off then turned on just as i took the picture to tell me the battery is dieing.... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/wacko.png .)

tamiya's got it totally wrong, the bracket is sposed to connect to the black piece,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/b8298dfb.jpg

so everything was cut apart and sanded....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/c61cd47d.jpg

the alternator was cut in half...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/502184e6.jpg

Then more plastic added to get it too the right shape....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/a50651f7.jpg

then on the engine block the bracket was cut off and sanded, also started drilling out all the holes

bit more soon

transmission all so needs some work,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/9713bd03.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/4a8459f0.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/02d61ee8.jpg

still a lot more to do to it, decent amount of things still need to be reshaped....

next was this little box thing on top of the trans, stock tamiya even had it pointed the wrong way,

how tamiya did it:

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/98265be9.jpg

how its should look http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/laugh.png

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/b177b9f4.jpg

This piece still needed a bit of work and a flange was added around it...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/cba2b782.jpg

Then the area it attached too, needed a bit of work.

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/51b94dc0.jpg

still a bit more....

HIPPIE2
08-19-2012, 11:13 PM
turned my attention next to the engine block,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/70a932ec.jpg

(this area still needs a lot of work)

also the oil filter...... thing?(no idea what to call it)

welds where added, along with some other pieces....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/0bed8bf5.jpg

And the bottom of it had to be completely reshaped...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/c6610e8d.jpg

last few things, I've been messing with doing the fiberglass the piece on the right is stock, modified is on the left...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/d1fb7c0e.jpg

And I worked on the tire's trying to get a real heavy used look...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/6ae603cc.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/69034aac.jpg

HIPPIE2
08-19-2012, 11:13 PM
got some stuff added to the back on the transmission...

Reference shot:

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/32ede941.jpg

Then mine, added the cast in oil thing? painted it black to c if the putty was level..

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/bdbaaca6.jpg

Then I worked on one side of the front of the motor, Here's the reference, (this is a 934 motor, not a 935)

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/4e099c4d.jpg

Then mine....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/3e4ff6f0.jpg

In the same reference shot you can see some more stuff that need to be added, kinda hard to see but notice that around some parts there seam to be welds, tried to replicate this.....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/40fc7240.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/7c6a4feb.jpg

HIPPIE2
08-19-2012, 11:15 PM
Then I did some stuff on the bottom,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/f22c845e.jpg

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/2b6e4115.jpg

also got the valve cover all drilled out..

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/39e27bc9.jpg

Thanks for looking, this is kinda a odd request but I would really appreciate criticism if possible, I'm trying to build this not looking like a 15 year old built it, and whenever this is any sort of flaw, down to the most munute thing, it would be nice to point it out so I can make this the best model possible for me..

Thanks again, http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

P.S. sorry for all the separate post, don't want to over load the forum....

Cool project and it looks like you're doing the kit justice!

When you say 004 went M.I.A, do you mean recently? IIRC, Gunnar Racing had it for sale a few years ago and it may be worth having a look through their old archives:

http://www.gunnarracing.com/

Looks like you already have some nice reference photos anyway!

If I could make one suggestion, the best engine mod I did on this model was to cut off the alternator fan and thin the blades from the back making 'L' shaped cuts, so they look like thin, folded metal. Quite time consuming, but results looks great, will try to upload a photo...when I find the model!:iceslolan

thanks for the comments guys, and cinqster, not to sound like a smart ass but your wrong.....

the #4 car your talking about is ch. number 001, the car I'm building is ch. number 004, which is the car that the tamiya kit represents (#1) the out side numbers on the cars don't match at all, but speaking of car #4 ch. 001 it's the car that SMS used for there reference CD which I have and is very nice, the main deference of the two is the intake, my car use's a system similar to the 934, while the #4 ch.001 was converted to a different system some time in it's carer....

I don't mean to sound rude in any way, of coarse.

Anyways thanks for the great tip! on the alternator, I've been trying to figure out how to fix that....

Hip,
Your level of desired detail is impressive as is the workmanship. I built this kit in '88 / '89 when it was first released and though I love the old car, it's lightyears from your effort.
Speaking from track experience, a criticism about the tire work you did. That level of clag you've added would only happen trundling back into the pits from an off-line excursion. Car can't run effectively on track like that. If you're making a pit diorama, it works.
However, I favor pick-up from stones and gravel, very common the world over. Tans and whites paint dots applied as light or heavy as you choose. I love the look of hot tires with stone pick-up and replicated that on my GT seen here:

thanks for all the comments guys.... MerlinPro, don't worry about posting your GT-40, its a amazing build, and you should show it off more.... and thanks for the tire tip, living in Detroit, all I get to see in the racing world is boring nascar so I had no idea what the tires would look like, I was copying Robex's AMAZING build, probably the best 935 in my opinion, just hoping i can do half of what he did...
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=928307
And mach1 2003 looked up your build, and it's epic, hope you don't mind but I'm probably gona steal the fiberglass thing.....

any way to the car!

got the trans work mostly done, Here's a bunch of pic's all around it in case your trying the same thing...

on some of the Porsche forums that I've been handing around it seems like the fans get pretty destroyed, figure with all the rubber slag they would be pretty shredded....

bit more...

on to the wheels!

scale motors sports have made it pretty well know that the speedline rims in the back are inaccurate, but they are kinda wrong, the 5 spoke speed lines are used with rain tires, and from what I can tell this car did drive a few races in the rain... Unfortunately, the kit comes with slicks, I've heard that there maybe some rc parts that will work but I'm still looking, any ways I got the chrome striped of, then painted them black with a slight texture to look like powder coating, pay no attention to the tires they should be going....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/afbeb8b9.jpg

the back of the rim got all detailed out to, I sal in some reference pic's marking on the back so I copied them out to some stencils

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/1f4b7916.jpg
didn't see the red over spray in real life, working on fixing it now.....

Here's a closer shot, they seemed to be pretty faded in 1!1 so I sprayed pretty light....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/28ff3c3e.jpg

also worked on the front bbs, drilled out all the holes after striping the chrome...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/ef3c0e72.jpg

not that noticeable from the front, but pretty obvious in the back....

next off was the side of the engine block to be honestly I have no idea what they are, but anyways there added...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/ce15a09d.jpg

still need to sand this side then add the welds but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to sand it easily?

HIPPIE2
08-23-2012, 11:40 PM
and lastly I've been working on the spark plugs, Porsche has got some funny spark plug assembly, that I tried to replicate.

first I punch out bunch a plastic circles with a dull punch so the edges would be frayed (the white parts)

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/933af617.jpg

then the turned parts above go on top to create some sort of spark pug boot

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/30af0427.jpg

then I airbrushed all the circles some flat black then dry brushed them with brown to look like creaked leather, then the turned parts where painted semi gloss black....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/74e57a1c.jpg

and as you can tell from above I painted the lower valve covers, It seems that these are right next to the exhaust on the 1!1 car so the paint burbles a lot, tried doing this by spraying the paint from a few inch. back....

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/9fc9aa03.jpg

Well thanks for looking, and your honest comment would be nice...................

Limited Skill.... Really? Your upgrading & detailing an already well engineered & detail heavy kit, your work is awesome!!!

& What Racecar was ever perfect?... leave it I reckon!

Eric Cole

Agreed... I would leave it. By the time all the parts are installed and the engine is in the car you'll only see parts of it here and there. It'll be perfect. If it were less texture you wouldnt be able to notice it.

I haven't posted on this thread yet, but thought this was a good time to start. It's not a surprise - I'm enjoying this one! There's some nice detailing going on, although I'm surprised about the cover-plate on the gearbox being moulded completely the wrong way around (I confess, I did check through the books - blimey, you're right!)

Regarding the fan shroud, I agree that it's looking pretty good as it is - the colour is spot-on (and there's enough variation in colour anyway, depending on which photos you refer to), and if you try to smooth it out I suspect you're going to lose most of the weave in the process. See how it looks with all the inlets and plumbing attached - I think it will all come together rather well!

Hippie-think of it this way; if that texture was enlarged 12 times it would look like a shag rug. Sort of looks like a metal part retrieved from under the ocean.
Always think of 1:1 and look at real aluminum castings on blocks and gearboxes.
Some Alclad misted from a distance will give perfect, scale 'grain' to the casting. I practice on scrap styrene or cardboard.

i agree with the last comment, looks as though it was recovered from the mary rose. what you must remember is the maximum this car would run is for 24 hours, up to that point it would have been clean with possibly wear marks on paint, or scuffs on the casting. not really like a rally car after it has done a wrc rally. please don't take offence at my comments.

Yeah, I'm with the previous two on the texture paint. It's really not working. Could you just give it a good scrub with toothbrush after painting to get rid of the major bumps? How about just brush painting that piece with a little talc mixed into the paint? Or airbrush from farther away?

Great job on the rest of it!

Rustoleum makes a very nice textured paint in a spray can and it comes in various colors. If the color you need is not available you can paint over the textured paint with other paints.

http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=27

Here's an example of what it looks like sprayed on a part.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/000_1700.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/Trumpeter%2012th%20Scale%20GT40%20WIP/100_3251.jpg

...and you can control the level of texture by how close, or far way, from the part you spray. The intake covers on the 935 engine were done from about 15" away and the dash was done from about 7" away.

Thanks for the input guys, defently gona strip the paint, allready tried a few times not so sucessfuly. this crap is tough. But the resond I'm using all thses diffrent paint is in this build i'm trying to represent as many diffrent textures as possable, if u look at the part allready painted most have something done to them, like the bottom valve covers, i just sprayed normal paint from far away to get mild texture,

thanks again for your comments!!

(this next parts more abut the real car than the model, i just need to write it down so i don't forget....)

love gt40 puttogether a bit of history on the car's http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1073584&page=3

which is great but i wanted to go in more detail,

I said before i'm building 935/77 004, sorry world but I was totally epically wrong that's this car...

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/77mugeldep1268230632_zps885e0e1a.jpg

what makes it differing is the fact that it has 2 turbo's and the funny looking vents on the side:

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/Untitled_zpse27359bd.png

Instead i'm build the 1966 car's which there was 4 of :

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/7704_4877_zpsac8f3ff7.jpg

(the other cars #3 i lost the pic but will come back soon.....)

originally the goal was to build the #1 car like the kit does but i can't find much info on this car specifically the vin, whiched I'd love to have, so instead I'm gonna change and build the #4 car which I have ton's of picture's of I believe I've even talked with the owner or one of the former owners....

hopefully the model will be more accurate now.. sorry for taking up space on a model forum but I kinda need to write it down otherwise I'd forget......

also silly question dose any one know anything about this car??

Those valve covers, particularly the upper ones, are just incredibly realistic. I had a Carrera and an SC, and many is the valve adjustment I did on those things, so I know just what they look like after having run a few miles. How did you do the weathering on those guys? Stunning...

Just wondering how you are planning to tackle the rear fenders on the #4 car, they are very different from the kit. Maybe better to use a body from the 934 kit no??

Naturally, I'm loving the detailing going on with the engine and fan, but I thought I could add some historical info too...time to hit the books!

So, there were two factory 935's built for 1976 - but the chassis numbers depend on which book you read! John Starkey's 'R to GT2' gives them as 930 570 0001: R14 and 930 570 0002: R15, whereas Barth / Dobronz's 'Porsche 934-935...' says they were 930 670 0002: R15 (for 001), and 930 670 0003: R16 (for 002).

Either way, 001 was used for testing and development in late '75 and early '76, before making it's (winning) race debut at Watkin's Glen in July (carrying no.4, as in the photo above!). It only contested two races in factory hands - the second outing at Dijon in September resulting in a third-place finish - before being sold to Vasek Polak in the USA for 1977.

002 was the main car for the 1976 season, contesting eight rounds of the World Championship of Makes. It won at Mugello (car no.4, with the more regular-911-like rear wings / fenders), Vallelunga (no.1), and Dijon (no.1), so that's the same car in the first two victory posters. At Le Mans (no.40) it finished fourth overall, winning Group 5.

The new car for 1977 wouldn't make it's race debut until Silverstone in May, so 002 was used for Daytona (no.1) and Mugello (no.2) in February and March. It didn't finish at Daytona, but won at Mugello - so that's the third victory poster! This chassis stayed in Porsche's hands and is now part of the musem collection.

So, if it's a 1976 Martini-Porsche 935 anywhere other than at Watkins Glen or Dijon, it's going to be the second car - chassis 002.

Hope this helps to give a little background - I'd better stop now so I can do some work on the Moby...

scrachbuilt, you rock man!!!

days of internet searching have got me tons of wrong answers, and with two books you prove me wrong, fallowing your trend I went to all the local book store's and actually found one with info on my car: The Porsche 911 and derivatives by Michael Cotton, in the back it confirms that there was only 2 cars, I was totally wrong...... :screwy:

in the back it gives vins for all race cars here's exactly how its typed.

930570002-R15
935.001
935.002

the car I have all the reference for is the one that was recently up for auction,

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/_zpsf2a853c7.jpg

its called the first 935 ever build so I'm guessing it's car 001

Thanks again for the help!!! I'll have some progress pic's soon

one other thing, I'm considering getting the front wheels turned so I'd have real metal, I'd only be doing the front half but from the out side it would look perfect. Here's the part that would be made:

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/DSCN3837_zps80fa802f.jpg

I'm just curious if any one else is interested, there gonna cost somewhere in the 75-80 dollar(US) range for a set. Curious if anyone else was intested and I could point you in the too the custom machinist I'm considering....

just food for thought........

Hi,

Sorry for the long wait and unfortunately I have little to show,

I don't know why but for some reason I have just given up on this, and not just this car, but all modeling in general. This was my first year in High school and the is homework hitting me hard. Kinda just slowly gave up and moved on to other hobby's that take less time. I feel kinda weird posting just to say bye, but I hate it when I go around looking at old threads then they just die out without any notice, so I figured I'd try not to be another one of those.

I do have one pic, nothing that amazing, its just that I finished it a few weeks ago and just got around to taking a picture (its the bottom of the Intake)

http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/dragsterlover2/DSCN0299_zpsd8454273.jpg

Sorry for ending the thread with suckish new's, but hopefully I'll pick this back up in the summer

2.3 milion dollars car. with wrong sticker on doors. LOL.

Think we need Johan Joka-1 to clarify the 935/76's version. He was very helpful with me in my thread of the same car u are making in 1/24.

Really amazing work!! Love the textures and detailing. I made a kit of the Lemans 1976 car in 1/24th scale around 10 years ago in resin.

About my age, I'm 15 if anyone really cares, never bothered to say anything because I figured it would effect what you guys thought of me......

Hippie2, there's no minimum age to build and to post on this forum, as far as I know. I for one will miss your up-dates on this Porsche. For someone who's 15 you have great skills. You might want to reconsider.

Sorry to see this one on hiatus. You're doing a fabulous job no matter what your age; I'd be proud to call this work my own.

Hopefully once summer rolls around you'll have a little more time on your hands to dive in again. Good luck!

Hey guys, need help with attaching the turbocharger.

Referring to Step-18 in the instruction manual.

I spent over 2 hours yesterday and made no progress :( so need help.

1 - Can not figure out where part N36 attaches
2 - It seems L27 can not reach part H38; perhaps that's because the section that N26 & L27 are on are not aligned correctly
3 - In the picture it looks like N41 points in the same direction as N34/35, but they go off at different angles.

Anyhow, bottom line is I can't figure out how to attach this piece.

Any help is greatly appreciated. You can also reach me at papalou702 gmail

Many thanks
Lou
