There are a few good stock sleeper cars out there, it looks like the Pontiac GTO will be one, and I surprised many people off the line with my 1991 Ford Probe GT 2.2 turbo. My vote for favorite sleeper though car has to go to the early 1990's Dodge Omni GLHS. I figure a 2200 lb Omni with 200 HP would surprise many of the unknowing masses. Any other opinions on this one?

What about the supercharged Omni FTH?

Do you mean the Dodge Omni GLH? It was turbocharged, unless you're talking about another car? My LeBaron made a pretty good sleeper. I'm afraid the new GTC probably won't though. It won't be much of a sleeper.

That one is easy!
1994-1996 Buick Roadmaster!

The Omni GLHS was a special edition of the Omni GLH, I believe there were about 500 of them made. The "S" in GLHS is Carroll Shelby, who did a few modifications to the engine and suspension, and did some lightening of the car. The car was available through Dodge dealers as a special model.

The Buick Roadmaster with the LT1 is a good choice as well, and I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned any of the mid-60's sedans that had really big engines in them.

A year from now, it could be the Dodge Magnum. Imagine what a station wagon with 345 horsepower could do. :D

But the thing is, anyone who races has an idea of what a T-Tpye or GN looks like and wouldn't race it. There goes the sleeper theory...

Not to try to promote my own car, but my Maxima and the ladder generation(2002-2003) are sleepers. 0-60 in 5.9 in a 4 door sedan. 6-speed gear-box, and a pretty subtle look.

My car always surprises people when I gun it. It is very quick for not looking it.

for people that know their cars the new gen maxima's are not the best sleepers....we all know the capabilities of those 3.5 VQ's

those 3.8L turbo engines are potent little suckers, i have the new GM HighTech magazine, this guy put together a 3.8L regal, runs 25 lbs of boost through it, its drivin 200 miles per week, runs 9.95 @ 140mph. now thats bad ass. as for no one racing the grand national, thats why i said regal t type, looks like a plain jane regal, especially at night.

1964 Ramcharger. Tiny little car weighing less than 3000 pounds yet it had a 426 max wedge rated at 450 HP. The car is fugly too, except the big scoupe on the front.

That new SRT-4 Neon is pretty damn impressive.....5.4 0-60 and a low 14 1/4.......take off the wing, and fill the holes. No one will know what hit em......

Nope, I mean the Omni FTH (Faster Than Hell) I got a road test on it in a 1985 issue of Motor Trend, I don't know how many they ended up making - but I guess it was very few since so few people know about them.

It must have been VERY few for me not to hear about them. That's pretty cool. I'll have to look up those, you've sparked my interest.

If you're looking for info, the issue I have is the December 1985 issue of Motor Trend. the article is titled Dodge Omni FTH Juvenile Delinquency is only a supercharger away
Unfortunately, it seems info on these cars is scarce too (I can't find anything online!)

How can you say any 69 Camaro is a sleeper? They all look mean.

I would have to say the ultimate sleeper are the Chrysler turbocharged mini-vans. It doesn;t take much to get them running in the 12s. There is also nothing better than the look on a rices face as you beat him in a mini-van. That is the only way my dad would by one when we were kids was because the damn thing had a turbo.

I have to admit, my favorite sleeper car (though not commercially available) is a minivan. A few years ago when McLaren was running Renault engines, they basically took the engine, drivetrain, and some of the chassis components from their F1 race car and put a Renault Espace minivan body (fairly common in France) on it. For fun, the McLaren Engineers liked to take it on the autobahn and blow by some of the really fast cars. Can you imagine cruising at 180 MPH in your brand new Porsche 911 Turbo and seeing a minivan gaining on you?:eek2:

Omni GLH and GLHS were the factory models, there's no friggin' FTH model from the factory unless it was a test mule or a Motor Trend or personal modified car.

There were two Dodge Omni's-the GLH was factory produced and had the 2.2 liter turbocharged engine-nickname "Goes Like Hell".The other one was the FTH -nicknamed "Faster than Hell"- and about 4 or 5 hundred were built by Carroll Shelby. These cars were supercharged and were absolute monsters with a life expectancy of about 5 minutes if u were not real careful.Lots of sleepers out there-Subaru WRX STis without the wing, the new Mazda 3 GT with a 265 hp turbo intercooled and a 6 speed (looks like a grocery getter),the new 500 hp Cadillac coupe, etc, etc.BJ
