Do you have to import these like the Skyline?

sorry if I sound like a complete idiot for asking this to you RX-7 experts, but I was just wondering, because I checked Mazda out and it doesn't look like they sell them here. Thanx

Mazda doesn't currently sell the RX7 in the United States. Equally interesting is that Mazda doesn't currently BUILD the RX7 anywhere. The last time the RX7 was imported was in 1995, but there are plans for a new RX7 replacement to follow the introduction of the RX8, which should be here very soon.

I see this is kind of an old post. But figured I would respond.

The RX-7 CAN legally be imported and legalized through a Registered Importer. The 3rd Gen RX-7 is on the NHTSA list of cars that can be legally imported and licensed. It costs much less to legalize it than a Skyline. You are looking at about $6000 + the car + shipping. RX-7's run about $8000usd for a REAL nice one in Japan, I've seen them as low as $3000.

So the answer is yes, you can import it, you have to go through a registered importer. I'll be bringing back a 3rd gen RX-7 with me when I get stationed back in the US from Japan, will be about 4 years from now though (and I get 2 cars shipped for free, might bring 2 back and sell one  ). Check the NHTSA's site for other cars that can be currently imported and legalized (Escort RS Cosworth :bigthumb: )

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

(see "Vehicle Eligibility List" as well as other topics in there for legal matters)

Yes...an RX7 can be imported, but not any model newer than 1995. Which means it would make much more sense to buy one already here and imported by Mazda.

I don't see why it would be pointless to import a 95 or 94. Is there something wrong with 95's? I've seen a couple JDM 93-95 sell for $20k+ in the US. Which is probably what I'll do, find one for cheap before I come back, have it shipped back with me along with my personal RX-7, legalize it, and throw it on ebay, for a nice little profit.
