Manual Transmission Problem

I have a 1993 Saturn SC 2dr 5 speed w/manual transmission. Recently it seems I blew some type of seal. Well that is what the mechanic told me. He said I blew an inner transmission seal. Does this mean I have to replace the entire transmission. I had zero problems before this just spontaneously happened. No shifting issues, no clutch issues nothing. Just parked at the gas station and looked down and there was a HUGE puddle of pink fluid all over coming from my car. Had to have it towed to the mechanic. He had originally thought it was just a axel seal, then thought it was an out transmission seal, but now has discovered it is an inner seal. Wouldn't I have had some type of indication this was going to go? Any ideas how much this repair should cost...he is telling me $2000...which is really more than the car is worth. Any information is helpful. Thank you.
