Is A 330 xi Worth It?

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums. I'm 18 and in college, and it's about time that I buy a car. I'm a bit of a car guy (or at least beginning to be), and I want a car that's pretty sporty and fun. So, I've been looking at some more affordable BMW's. Obviously it's a bit of a stretch, but I have a fantastic paying job (at least for a 18 year old). Specifically, the 330 xi is a car I've been looking at because of the 4 wheel drive. I guess what I'm asking is: would this car be a good choice? I need something with a fair bit of room, good gas mileage, safe, fun and sporty, etc. General college stuff. Edit: I also looked at some 5 series models. Could anyone clarify what separates the two series?
