Advice on replacing my steering gear

Hey guys, I have a 99' Chevy Cav that needs a new steering gear. It's been slowly leaking power steering fluid and I've had to keep topping off the fluid in the meantime, while I plan on either taking a stab at it myself, or going to a mechanic. The mechanic quoted me $650 for the job with labor. I can get a steering gear for around $150 and save $500, but would it be wise to attempt the job with just a jack and not a lift? I have the Haynes manual and it seems like it might really be bear using just a jack to get under the car. I just don't want to get into something that I might regret. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Would be tough with just a jack and stands. The frame section needs to come down to replace the gear. It could be done, but would be tough, espically if you have never done one before.
