LANCIA STRATOS HF Doyusha 1:12 Alitalia

Dear community,

after spending another 6 months at my beloved modeling desk let me introduce you my latest finished project.

It’s the impressive 1-12 scale Lancia Stratos HF from Doyusha in that typical and well-known Alitalia-livery as driven at the Monte Carlo Rally. The kit itself is really impressive at first sight, no doubt, but when it comes to modeling……….lots of improvements, cleaning, scratching etc…..business as usual, you know. And in that special case all body parts should be movable at every time.

And in the very end, FOR SURE, as you might imagine, the subject calls for a realistic and demanding weathering job.
Forgive me, I must sound like a priest for telling that a thousand times, but that mud and dirt makes cars (of all scales!!!) so much more lively and interesting.
Here we go.

under construction:

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/0042.jpg

Prior to finishing, various clear parts are masked to prevent mistakes by overdoing. Once the colour fog is applied......you know......

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/005-1.jpg

The first finishing step:
A mixture of flat earth, buff and light grey (Tamiya Acryls) is slightly sprayed on. The effect is that the glossy decals and areas are flatened and the complete surface is kind of "melt together":

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/006.jpg

The wheels:
To achieve that kind of psycadelic ocre-yellow a colour was mixed from flat yellow and yellow green. The result is quite satisfying. Then a wash was applied with artist oils to obtain depth.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/001.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/003.jpg
......and then the finishing steps are done.
Another coat of the colours mentioned above BUT this time darkened with flat black. This second mixture was then carefully brought on at selected areas only. It's very useful to have good reference pictures of the depending subject, e.g. here the surface behind the wheels and the especially the back was chosen. Then, to achieve real mud and slurry, a mixture of fine structural paste, acryls and grinded pastel chalks was made and brought on the surface as follows. Dip an old pencil in that mixture, hold it in front of the depending area of the miniature and then give air blasts from your airbrush direct onto the brush. That will "throw" the mixture right onto the surface, as in real!! Was that a somehow good explanation????

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Lancia%20Stratos%20HF/030a.jpg

VERY short summary: The kit is demanding, nevertheless a good base for an impressive miniature. The decals are a true nightmare, like parchment, thick and inflexible. So the whole front "grill" between the windshield and the extra frontlights was masked and spray-painted. The masking itself took me 2 days..........the dashboard was upgraded with lettering, the seatbelts were given an extra detailling and the BRITAX-logos were handwritten. And always an eye or two on the functionality of the doors, the front lid and the engine hood.

It is always a thin line between too less and too much when it comes to weathering. It is important to keep the scale in mind and how much mud a miniature can "tolerate". I wanted the car to show the result of a hard, rough and cold but dry stage of the Monte-Carlo rallye. The surface of the tyres are relatively "clean" and carefully highlighted because i like the profile of the Pirellis a lot and the dirt was thrown off of them in the final stage of the leg. So this is my interpretation of a Stratos in use, one of the (if not THE) most impressive mud monsters ever!!!

I hope you like the Stratos and i appreciate all your comments and critics!!

And , Oh, right, ALL THE BEST FOR 2012 TO ALL OF YOU!!!
Keep on glueing those funny little plastic parts together............

Yours
Jochen

It's a superb model and superb build !!
nevertheless to me the ride height really seems too high for a Monte Carlo rally, I firstly thought the car depicted the RAC rally and had to look at the rally plate to be sure !! :sly: :cwm27:

Fantastic model Jochen, I was always wondering how this model looks built properly. Now I must get one :)
I must admit that Phil is right...it sit just a bit to high, is suspension workable?

One last detail I'm thinking about looking again at the pics which you should easily be able to add regarding the scale is the little chains holding the rear mug guards, they are missing for the moment on your model, don't know if you expect to add them or forgot/missed them but I'm almost 100% sure they used some in Monte Carlo, even if the Stratos was used not to bring back all their mud guards at the rally finish

@rallymaster: Could you show a picture of the chains you were preferring? I am curious to know.

I agree with you Phil about the chains and I'm sure a have a photo of them filed away somewhere!? I found some small chain years back in a jewellery making shop, which I've saved for this very model.

Now, I am no rally expert, but I found a few things that need changing when researching the '77 Monte car. The seats were a light/mid grey and the bulkhead behind the seats was grey on some days and what appears white, on other days, I believe it was a quilted heat shield material. I think it also ran the rounded bare fibreglass airbox and possibly the exhaust outlets with the Porsche type radial splitters/fins. My main critisism of the kit is the Alitalia logos for the rear wings which are far too small, though they are correct for the '76 Monte, IIRC.

Having said that, you have done an absolutely fantastic job Jochen - the weathering is superb and at least you have finished it, (unlike mine, which is awaiting me redrawing the decals one distant day)!

Your photos are ace too!

I don't know if I have a close-up pic somewhere in my books, checked my hard drive and haven't it already downloaded, so I tried a quick google search...

Not perfect pics but we show those famous thin chains

Hi all,
thanks a lot for your time, your kind words and especially your constructive comments!
I must admit that these chains took me quite some hours to think about while building the rear……due to the lack of good and proper reference pictures I decided to do it without them. BUT by now and with your kind help and pictural support I will complement them. Also the rear “sun-blind “ area will be redone with coloring to improve the bad decals which were way to small and ugly and as I mentioned before.
The color of the interior and seats………believe it or not, I had the seats in a kind of medium grey and the bulkhead in a flat / dirty white BUT the look (IN SCALE!!) was that ugly that I decided to give it a neutral anthracit tone. I’m fine with it, the decision was final when gluing the coachwork to the chassis.
About the stand. Mhhhh……, on one hand, it is the quality of the kit (although the suspension IS WORKABLE!) the car “won’t come down” more. I help myself with the following explanation: When the car is “in heavy use” and the suspension is working and has temperature, the car sinks down a bit and lowers. Once when movement and shocks are over the suspension relaxes and the car comes up a bit more. Look at these massive rear tires. Don’t they need space and room for compression?
I know a lot of you are true fanatics and know a lot about rally cars, more than I do, no doubt. I appreciate your inputs and that even widens my horizon! I will go back to my shelf today……..once when done, I let you know.
Yours
Jochen

Hi folks,

sorry, me again with a last update.

Uuufffff............just finished another 5 hours working at the Stratos and taking new pictures.
After reading all your kind replys, comments and hints (by giving me perfect pictural feedback) i couldn't resist and rework the Stratos in case of the missing chains at the back and the missing colour at the sun-blind covering the "back window". Hope you like the pictures.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU BY MAKING THIS FORUM VERY VALUABLE!!!!!

The new pictures, fresh from the oven, still warm.......

And Sascha, yes, i think you're right. Don't know why but the big scale demands a even more realistic weathering because the finish is even more visible. Logisch! The smaller scales "are forgiving" more..........so to say.
Christian, vielen Dank!! Dein Stratos ist äußerst akkurat detailliert. Sehr fein! Danke für deine Anerkennung!

After i finished my job today i ran around like no one else to get that. I finaly found them in a "alternative jewelery" so to say. You can buy all kind of stuff to build your own ornaments. I payed 1,- Euro for 10cm. That was the deal. Then hurrying home and........

amazing job, but while I'm an absolutely wheathering noob (and I'm jealous of your skill :naughty:) I think a little more dust will be better, especially because of the mud splash you put

by the way, a "must to" is to get dirty the tires tread, it's absolutely too clean for all that mud on the wheels and on the car

WOW what a great build I love the weathering, you have got it perfect. I have this kit at home and plan to start it sometime, having heard about the decals, I have got some Zero paint done for them, just the thought of masking it all out to spray has stopped me getting started. Seeing this build has got my motivated to dig it out. It has got to be one of the best looking rally cars.

Tremendous job; you've inspired me to try the initial stage of weathering on the Le Mans 917 I've been working on instead of leaving it factory-fresh.

Two questions for you if I may:

How did you make labels for the dash?

How did you get that kind of 'streaky' effect on the windshield in the weathered portion?

Thanks and congratulations on a first rate job!

ianc

jochen kieslich
01-19-2012, 04:09 PM
Dear Robi, ianc, all the others.........

thank you so very much for your comments! I'm overwhelmed.....
Therefore i will reply once again personaly.

ianc,

The labels are done with flat white 3M self adhesive tape, cut in thin stripes and pieces, labeled with dry stencillings in 1:35 scale from VERLINDEN productions, a leftover from my former military modeling times.

The streaks are carefully "scratched" in the VERY FRESH paint. It's important to do that immediately after airbrushing the windshield when the paint hasn't dried up completely. I use needles and dried brushes of various sizes and just draw the streaks out from the former masked area. That stimulates the water running away from the windshield wiper as a result of speed. BUT always try to imagine HOW and WHERE the water could have run!! (Car in high speed, more slow curves, in rest????) It seems that the effect works...........;-)

Hope this helps! Let me encourage you with what you are planning about your 917. Those cars are so much more "alive" with that realistic grade of patina, dirt and dust!!!!!!! Please do so.

All the best

jochen

Yes, Top Gear was a bit of a hatchet job unfairly edited for comic effect to stress Lancia unreliability.
They drove twenty laps to achieve the two spins, edited for the lap shown.
Kit cars can only be as good as the person who built them, but Hawk are among the best.

LOL...I know about the GT40 experiences from my time in the GT40club! I only stopped looking for one of them after finding I couldn't fit in the cockpit, even with the infamous roof bump.

I once had the displeasure (whilst camping at Le Mans) to listen to Noel Edmonds on Radio Le Mans as he publicly slagged off all GT40 replica owners for not having the real thing, as he happened to own a real one....what a complete ***t!

Most of the interior was also from a Fiat 127 too! Somewhere in my loft I have saved gauges, door handles ect. in readiness!

Believe me, having a Porsche Spyder replica is no better. I've had people come up to me with disgust, suggesting I should at least have the Fuhrmann 4 cam installed! Things generally don't go down well when I tell them my merely tuned Beetle engine gives me better performance & gets me from London to Le Mans and back 4 times without any servicing! If that doesn't do the trick, I usually mention the Furhmann engines now come in at circa $200,000 and require the world's best 4 cam experts to take at least 14 hours for a tune up! Plus there's only two of them on planet I'd personally trust to do such a thing (neither are in Europe!). :nono:

Stratgp4 - I've seen your car in my travels, but not sure where - perhaps AutoItalia at Brooklands or the Kent Kit Car Show at Detling? I used to run the silly red Van Aaken Turbo Cinquecento Sporting plus a heavily tweaked Lancia Thema 16V Turbo (planned to be the Stratos donor car - before the cambelt went...LOL!).

A bit more on thread now!

Who has this kit and would really like a set of good quality decals set for it?Never been happy with the Alitalia green on the decals, let alone the dodgy decal logos. At home I have an Alps printer, but it's never worked properly, so to that end, if enough folk are interested I would do the artwork and get a decal proper manufacturer to produce it for us. I'd charge nothing for my artwork and we'd split production costs. Needless to say, I'd send all pre-print artwork to everyone involved for approval and would not proceed until everyone's happy!

Yes lovegt40, same club, but not been to a meet of theirs for a while..used to do the annual Monkey Puzzle xmas pub meet and often run into most members on the corner of the high st. in Argnage! Can't remember who I was camping with in 2006 - I've done most of the 24 hours for the last 20 years and only missed a couple of Classics (including this year!). I normally take the Spyder for the Classic - if you've heard it, you'd not forget it!

I think 2006 was the year Adrian Newey totalled his Essex Wire GT40 in front of me along the Mulsanne? I photographed the crash and the resultant carnage on the tow trailer too...needless to say, two years later the car was up and running at events

The enthusiast club was absolutely the nicest car club I've ever joined.maybe for its british nut lovely behave. me and my friends simply loved the group too much. That year we travel around europe to join theme as if going to woodstock 4 the beatles.

Still remember the "camping shower area" done by a nut engeneer with some car parts and some water tubes. ahahah...too great really!and it worked too well, of course.
As well as the great wellcome given in the middle of the night to some german and Dutch foolish brunch of Gt40s friends(some deadly tuned in german style,so ultra wide body, BBS rims...targa top,too nice also)

I was there with a goup of italian friends and camping together in ford gt40 area.Ford itslelf gave a great help to the club.
I also took a lap inside la Sarthe with Roy Snook and his TS40, that was nearly a chock. too nice really...seems still a dream.

I was really too near to buy one. I was just stopped by the italian far west condition to make theme street legal.we are as Burundi, unless u agree to mafia payment and with the same amount u will pay for the car, u can have a road plate.Went to Uk 2 times with money in hands. One time for a nice factory build TS40 and another time for a hill climb GTD.
Then I discover sweden and the greatest repilca manifacturer in europe, with swedish quality and precision, and fall in love to his works at once.
For sure my car (whenever I can) will be a gox.

sorry for the big topic drift, but 4me gt40...... is something very very special, in the way of cars..;)

Yes both cars were at Detling Kit Car show, the blue one on the Hawk stand.

This is my favourite car and you made a hell of a job with it. I thought it looked good clean and pristine, but the way you weathered it is just amazing.
