Hello All. This forum looks pretty dead, but maybe there are a few lurkers out there that can lend a hand. I'm working on a 1994 Dodge Intrepid with a 3.3L engine. The heater isn't working very well at all. I have run water straight through the heater core with a garden hose and it doesn't seem to be clogged up at all. I have also taken the blend air door actuator off and made sure the blend door was set on heat. Also, when the car is warmed up, I can pinch all of the heater hoses off by hand, and I don't feel like there is much, if any coolant flowing through them. The car isn't overheating or anything, so I'm wondering if the water pump could be working but just not pushing enough water through the system to run the heat. ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-Greg

If your temp gauge is running cooler than normal, I would suspect a partially stuck open thermostadt. Have you bled the air out of the system after the flush? Either ramp up the front end, or park on a hill(nose high) Take off the rad cap, and let the car run. If your coolant level drops, just add more. You may see it "burp" air. Just did a mazda 2.0 that took 30mins to get all the air out.

When you ran water thru the heater core did you flush in both directions??? In addition to previous poster you may want to check the radiator cap or replace it.

Thanks guys. I didn't flush it in both directions, but the water went through so easily I really don't think it's clogged. I also just did a pressure test on the cooling system, and it held 17 pounds of pressure for at least 10 minutes until I took off the tester. The temp gauge isn't any below normal either. Any chance the water pump could just not be strong enough anymore?

How many miles on vehicle???

I would try flushing the heater core in both directions annd also iff vailable give a burst of air in both directions.

When was the last thermostat change???

Did you pressure test te radiator cap also???

It should not be that hard to remove water pump, just be careful not to twist off the bolts as they are small bolts, then you know if the fins are good or not.

It has about 160,000 on it. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, and radiator cap. The car still won't build hardly any pressure. There is a heater hose on the back of the water pump housing that never gets very hot and definately doesn't feel like there is water flowing through it..

I would try backflusing the heatern core ( both directions). Make sure you have got all the air burped out of the system.
