1999 Cavalier: DOT3 or DOT4?

I know that 2006+ cars all take DOT4.

I know that you can't mix DOT5 with any other type.

What I don't know is,
is it probable that my 1999 car has DOT3?

Is there any advantage to switching to DOT4?

Can DOT3 and DOT4 be mixed?
What would happen if DOT4 was used to top up a DOT3 brake system?

Your car has DOT 3 brake fluid in it. It's never a good idea to mix brake fluids. DOT 4 is more of "performance" type of fluid with a higher boiling point and greater ability to absorb moisture. On your '99 Cavalier there is no reason to change from 3 to 4. You would'nt notice a difference.

Thanks for this response.

I was concerned about putting the wrong brake fluid in.
I'll be using DOT3 on your advice.
