ABS Light Stuck On

Hi:

My 2002 Pontiac Montanna the ABS light comes on at startup and remains on.

In the past it would occasionally come on if the commections to the front brakes got damp, But if you shut engine off and restarted it issue would normally correct itself.

If I plug my Diagnostic Meter in will that detect the error code if there is one, check engine light is not on.

Any suggestions on a direcection to head with this would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Only if your diagnostic meter can read ABS codes....

Chances are, you could have a bad speed sensor or wire harness at one of the wheels.....could also have a bad connector /plug....think underneath the vehicle, behind the driver's seat, there are connectors that go through the floor, some go to the rear ABS sensors....check for corrosion.....but without ABS codes pointing you towards one wheel, can't really do anything if a visual inspection turns up nothing....

Thanks for the reply..
Took a look under the van. Wiring all looks good.

Are the ABS code meters that are less than thousands of dollars. My OBD II does not indicate it does ABS as well so probably not.

The scan tool at my local Autozone reads ABS codes....for free....

But that is in no way a diagnosis.....

Thank you for posting, Uncle57.

As this light may be indicating a malfunction of the ABS system itself, I would recommend bringing it to your servicing dealership for an official diagnosis.

If I can be of any further assistance, please private message me!

I've had this twice with the van. Usually, it is a good indication that the front wheel bearings will eventually need replacement. Once one goes it generally takes the sensor with it. The last one tripped the sensor but did not present itself as a bad wheel bearing. Once removed however, it was obvious the wheel bearing was gone. (This occurred at about 130,000 kms for the first one, and 209,000 kms for the most recent one).
