Power Steering Oil Cooler

Just had to fix the power steering fluid return line.

Guy that did it said he bypassed the Power Steering Oil Cooler. How detrimental can that be?

Looking it up at Auto Zone's website says it's only a $20 part, so replacing it wouldn't be THAT expensive!

Thank you

It is not critical but it can decrease the life of your pump and may cause issues with your rack and pinion steering. I would suggest that for $20 that you reinstall it as soon as you have the time.

I'm not even remotely mechanically inclined, so have to ask, does this part http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Compressor-Works-Power-Steering-Oil-Cooler/1988-Buick-Century/_/N-ihpz2Z8oyp9?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=power+steering&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=577703_8981_0_ look like the correct thing I need?

Thanks

That will work but you will have to pay someone to install it for you.

I would not install one unless you start having issues. Most cars don't come with a cooler on the power steering and didn't for years. Save your money at this point. If you are going to have it installed check with your mechanic to see what he recommends he may have another type in mind.

The OEM part is just a line, I believe......

That is what my mechanic basically said he did when he said he bypassed the unit, was removed the line.

Thanks

Yes, I believe that it is just a line that goes to the front of the cradle and then loops back....there is no heat exchanger.....

Thanks everyone.

Any other opinions on how critical that line is? My brother, who is usually my mechanic, says don't worry about it.

Well, it's there for a reason.....

what is the model year of this buick century and the engine size?

1988 and 2.8

Just over 141,000 miles on it. Runs VERY well. Has some exterior rust, but underside is perfect. Little old lady from Pasadena owned it since new and only drove it on Sundays!!

That last part is a slight exaggeration. :)

I heard she was dealing drugs at the old folks home, and made frequent trips to Mexico to replenish her stash......and I think joints are not the only thing she rolls back.....

She must have lived right on the border to only have put 132,000 miles on it then, as that's what it had when I bought it at the end of last summer!!

Good one, Tech II :)
