Some news outlets mention 'cut away right hand side, major damage, all twisted' some mention Rowan 'has been moved to a Head Trauma unit' and then 'he only has a minor shoulder injury' - hope he's ok.

Cars can be repaired.......#061 was only seen yesterday and the day before tootling round London :(

...some mention Rowan 'has been moved to a Head Trauma unit'...

Perhaps he was just acting a bit silly? :)

Of course first concerns are always with his health and that of any others involved. If he has been injured I'd hope for a full and speedy recovery with no impact to his quality of life.

There have been conflicting reports on the fire aspect - hopefully it was nothing severe either. I know the F1 means a lot to him so of course he'll be sick over the incident. The lads at McLaren can probably build it back good as new for him in the same way they have many times before.

Yeah, the fire was apparently 'relatively' minor, with 1 fire hose needed to put it out.

Without his experience behind the wheel, things may have been alot worse

He's a comic genius - lets all hope for a speedy recovery.

Borrowed from a PH post:

Here's a statement from his agent:

Agent Peter Bennett-Jones yesterday revealed Atkinson was driving home after working on his latest film Johnny English Reborn, in which he plays a clumsy English spy.

Mr Bennett-Jones said: ''He suffered a painful shoulder injury but we are expecting him to be discharged later. He is shaken but not stirred.

''I think he was in pain and had some painkillers and stayed in hospital because obviously he didn't have a car to get home. It is nothing more serious than that.

''I spoke to the hospital and they said he was kept in overnight in observation and his shoulder was in pain.

''I have no idea if the car has been written off. It's been removed and I'm sure he won't want it to be written off.

''It has been taken back to his home and I'm sure he will want to get it repaired straight away.

''Rowan has been finishing off the editing of his latest Johnny English film and probably on the way back home, as he only lives round the corner in Northamptonshire.

''He will be very rattled by the whole thing and I think he'll want to keep as low profile as possible.''

That sounds a whole lot better than the earliest reports. As for staying low profile that is going to be hard with a new movie coming out. News travels amazingly quick these days.

Hope Rowan will be ok soon and his F1 too.

is it a total loss?

very afraid it is..

I wouldn't think so. It is quite a mess, but these cars are very fixable and their values ensure there is good reason and typically enough insurance money to put them back together good as new.

I wish Rowan a speedy recovery, a true petrolhead and comic,

Anybody who makes millions of people laugh as much as him, doe,s not deserve any negative media exposure when he has an accident of this nature.

Looking at the damage in the pic,.... yes thats repairable, it allways looks bad when the engine/gearbox/rear suspension have parted company. But when you study how these components are mounted to the monocoque, its designed that way to disipate as much energy away from the passenger compartment.

Rowan, if you visit this forum, I,m waiting with great anticipation to see your latest film, as I really need a good laugh , keep up the good work.

Best regards,

Martin.

If Rowan does happen to look in on this little slice of the internet from time to time one would hope that he's able to have a laugh over this whole situation. All the best to you sir!

I thought the worse when I looked some Finish text tv headlines, and so it was. It was F1.
Fortunately he is OK and I think the car will be fixed. Finish news said the car was on fire, but fortunately there wasn't any really big fire, if it was any.

Sounds like he's out of the hospital, and a Mclaren representative said they are waiting to hear details so they can start repairs in Woking.

Interesting piece of news came out of the promo interviews for Rowan Atkinson's upcoming Johnny English sequel:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/15111090

Actor Rowan Atkinson has talked about crashing his McLaren F1 super car into a tree in August this year.

The Blackadder and Mr Bean star said that while he had recovered from the incident, the car would take some time to mend.

The Johnny English Reborn star was talking to Newsbeat's entertainment reporter Nesta McGregor ahead of the release of the film.

Last weekend I spoke to mr. Atkinson during the 24h LeMans.
I asked him about his F1 and its repair; in process and should be finished during Christmas this year.
The milage on his F1; about 30k.

This was also what I heard during the F1 Tour but I wasn't intending to share the news as it wasn't shared in what I would call an open fashion - at least not with me.

There was also rumor of a contemplated color change, but I'd be a little suprised to see that. Better not be silver. :lol2:

Must have been some serious damage to be taking this long to repair?

Peloton25
06-22-2012, 10:58 AM
I think he damaged some bits you just don't want to damage and so there have been some extra challenges for McLaren. The repair of #067 took nearly as long after its fire.

Sounds like he damaged some major structural members then?

Peloton25

I don't claim to have the hard facts - I haven't asked anyone who would know and even if I did I am pretty certain no one would tell me in this case. I try to avoid asking questions that would be uncomfortable for someone 'in the know' to address.

As you can see in the photos the engine separated from the car at impact and it appears at least one of the engine mounts came out with it and was left hanging there. Who knows what condition the block was in when it finally spent it's inertia and whether any of its mounting points had broken. I never doubted they would repair the car but certainly knew it would not be swift.

To be honest in order to maintain the structural integrity it would not surprise me if McLaren replaced the whole tub to avoid any weak points. I am no crbon fibre expert but would imagine bonding in new carbon would not be as structurally sound as welding in new metal. Would welcome some input from a carbon expert on this one?

Paulthagerous

Spending a measly US$100,000 on a new tub would probably be worth it given the value of the car to be honest :)

Last I heard a new door was approx 12,000
