Manuel transmission won’t go into gear

I have an 87 pickup 4 cylinder, 85,000 miles. Driving last night. went to shift between 2nd and 3rd and it wouldn't go into gear. I thought I just missed the shift so I pulled over and the truck won't go into any gear. The shifter slides into the right place. Doesn't pop out of gear. I just get a slight grinding noise. Its the same in all 5 gears and reverse. Please tell me it's some kind of bushing.

Thanks, Ed

Check the linkage and movement of the shift levers on the side of the transmission. May be anything from your shifter to the linkage. If there's nothing wrong externally, you may have a broken shift fork.

The truck shifts into place perfectly, just doesn't catch the gear. I don't see any external damage.

Perhaps you have a broken shift fork.
