Nissan R390 GT1 w/ SMS photo etch

I started this, along with several others a while ago. I havent touched my models in a year and I finally sat down for a few days and made some progress. I has never used photoetch before so I am learnign as I go. There is tons of detail, and at the beginning a few pieces suffered my newbie wrath.

Tamiya kit

SMS photoetch

I cut all this detail off, ut forgot to take an after picture

had to cut all this detail off for the photoetch kit

its hard to notice some of the photoetch because its painted black, but thats how the real thing is.

brake cooling mounting, I am working on the ducting

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_5943.jpg

here is the brake duct. I robbed some exhuast parts from my butchered Taisan Starcard model and styrene rod.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_5987.jpg

i will sand smooth and even. it will be painted with MM metalizer and polished to replicate the duct piping

here is the kit part hacked up. the RB Motion shocks will be combined with the kit part

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_5993.jpg

you can see the notch in the shock mount i cut with a razor saw. the shock eyelet will go in there. the hole that i am drilling will be for the Scale Hardware bolts I will use to mount the shocks.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6041.jpg

here are the brakes. I need to make some touchups.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6015.jpg

the dash. Its fairly simple. the gauge/speedo decal was too big for the area it goes in. rather than risk tearing it, I left it alone. you cant see the error in person.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6006.jpg

i used toggle switches for the console. they are not perfectly lined up, but you cant tell in person. the pictures really show the flaws!

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6013.jpg

I started on the engine/transaxle assembly. looks wierd, but I only painted and detailed the transaxle. I need to mask off the engine and rear detail for a different color. wife was sleeping, couldnt turn on the airbrush compressor :nono:

the color is supposed to be gold-ish but I think it looks ugly. I used Metalizer "dark anadonic grey". washed with brown and black, then dry brushed with metalizer aluminum. bolts painted with metalizer brass.

got the front suspension done. Its not permenantlyinstalled yet so there are a few gaps.

I used Scale Hardware turned brass nuts and bolts .5mm :eek7: the shock is mounted with actual threaded hardware, not glued.

I painted all the parts of the shocks the way I wanted, only to find that the tolerances were too tight. the parts did not go back together and I had to strip the paint. regardless, i am happy with the results.

the ducts were a major underestimation. I did the best I could and after 4 tries this is what I have.

there still is quite a bit of detail left for the front end.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6103.jpg

the hardware really stands out. I cut a slot in the kit part to fit the shock mount.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/nihilistic1945/R390%20GT1/IMG_6104.jpg

I had to go BACKWARDS. i removed the PE duct mounts and seperated the chassis. the kit had a bump-out that interfered with the way the brake cooling ducts were supposed to route.

notice the left vs. right side

Very interesting build, I have exactly the same kit + transkit to build, one of my rare non rally race car but this Nissan is my favorite LM GT1.
Will follow your WIP closely and surely borrow a few tips. :)

thank you for the compliments. I am nearly finished wiring, just have to paint the firewall so I can mount the computer to it and glue it to the car. I also added the fluid reservoirs to the front end. i am very pleased with the way it is turning out. i have never used photoetch or done more wiring than spark plug wires. this modeling stuff is very time consuming :runaround:

tedious! wiring done. I have never attempted anything like this, I am very pleased with the results

The only thing left in the cockpit is the seat. I have no experience with decals on anything other than a flat surface, so it may be some time before it's done.

I also added the fluid reservoirs on the R/F of the car with the photoetch bracket

I also would welcome criticism from the more experience modelers. My reference pictures include the '97 and '98 version, so some details may be from one or the other. I know its not entirely accurate, but I would welcome suggestions on techniques and detailing

I didnt use carbon fiber because I dont have the experience to be comfortable with complex shapes. I am working on doing the seat in SMS Kevlar. so far I have gone through 4 attempts :runaround:

if Icould just figure out this decal forming stuff I could finish the seat! :runaround:

ive taken a break and moved onto the engine. should have some more pictures soon.

I'm guessing you're talking about getting the CF decals applied to the back of the seat? The trick, for me, is to simply throw away the kit stuff, create a 3-piece masking tape template and use SMS CF decals along with Micro-Set under the decal, Micro-Sol over the decal and a gentle application of heat from a small "travel" hairdryer. For me, it works every time and I've built models entirely covered in SMS CF decals.

Hemi Killer

I have been trying to apply it in 1 piece for fear of having seams show up. I suppose you wont be able to see it when the model is finished.

so I assume 1 piece for the center, and 2 seperate pieces for the "wings" of the seat?

I have SMS kevlar and 2 different SMS carbon fiber sheets. Im running out of kevlar

bvia
07-10-2011, 11:20 AM
My experience has been that the SMS kevlar sheets (yellow/black) are very brittle and almost always break on me. They simply are not as elastic as their hi-def or "regular" cf products. When I try to replicate a kevlar product on a body panel, I use the hi-def as an underlayment and then paint over the top (a mixture of Tamiya acrylic tan and yellow) and then a wash with Tamiya smoke and an overcoat of 50%semigloss/50%flat clear. You COULD do it in one piece, but it will depend on how good you are at making the masking tape pattern. You'll end up with one piece of masking tape with pie-cuts where the compound curves exist (the shoulder-wing area of the seat). Instead of all this, how about simply using paint to create the kevlar effect? Lay a basecoat of black, stretch a piece of mesh (pantyhose work good for this, a pair will last you years and different brands produce different mesh patterns) and lightly overspray with a tan/yellow mixture then overcoat with semi-gloss clear. Use acrylic and practice on a spare seat (you can always use IPA,85% and higher strength, to strip the practice pieces back to bare plastic). And yes, you'll usually end up with a 3-piece template if you're going to just cover it with decals.

some more progress for this morning. the rear shocks were a nightmare. I had many problems, including gluing the shock shafts in the compressed position, and I could NOT get them disassembled. http://forum.spc.org.uk/phpBB3/images/smilies/banghead.gif So the chok bodies and springs are connected only, not the shock shafts. At a certain angle you can see one of the shocks is bowed slightly, but not bad enough to make me start over again. They are Frankensteing shocks, a little bit of something from many different places.

kit part above, my part below. Same hardware as the front was used to assemble.

I am having trouble figuring out what wiring goes where. In all the reference pictures I have, all the wires and hoses seem to dissapear into the abyss!

if you need reference photos let me know, I think I have enough

rallymaster

I already have collected some pics too when I bought the kit and the transkit, but I have the same doubts about some wiring and plumbing, that's precisely why I expect to see your own wiring work !! :icon16:
I also noticed they are air ducts for rear brakes which intakes are similar to the turbos ones, did you see it on your reference pics ? that's a part tamiya completely forgot :screwy: :disappoin and need to be scratch built...

Hemi Killer
07-16-2011, 03:24 PM
yes I noticed that too. Every car has them Tamiya doesnt. Since they left them out all together, so did I. I just didnt have it in me to make them for this one. If I were to make them, I would honestly just buy another kit to use the intake ducts :grinyes:

thank you for relying on me for the wiring fiasco :grinno:

Lovely progress, I'll be also keeping this in mind for whenever I dig mine out of the box.

Tamiya have missed several other things as well. If you're planning to display the model with the engine cover off then one obvious thing are the trusses under the rear wing attachments. May I suggest looking through this thread (http://forum.autoinscale.com/viewtopic.php?id=6333)- it's in Russian but pictures are international and there are several very useful reference pics there, as well as just a writeup on a very impressive build.

I masked off more than I needed to mainly because I wanted to practice, and see how it turned out. I need to be a little more carefull.

there are a few bubbles in the bumper, but this is the worst of the paint so far, and the only damaged area.

someone on another forum brought up a good point. I should not have masked off like I did, just painted red, then masked, then painted the black. So I sanded the pain lines down with 100 grit and sprayed again so I could easily get a clean line when I paint the black .

Are you painting with a spray can or airbrush and are you trying to cover it all in one go? It looks like you are doing it with a spray can and go over the model several times with mist coats back to back. The best way to get an absolute smooth job is to use an airbrush, spray a mist coat, wait 15 mins, spray another, wait 15 mins, spray another, wait 15 minutes, then put one or two wet coats over the paint. That should lessen the orange peel and bubbles. Either way though, you can use a very high grit sand paper to smooth it and apply a buffing compound followed by wax. The model looks great though, so keep up the good work.

This model definitely brings back nightmares for me. I remember totally screwing this one up last year, and tossing it.

I re-bought it a few months ago, and I'm waiting for the day to try it again.

Photo-etch set looks great. I was looking into it myself. Keep up the great work!

I am using spray cans, I grabbed them at a hobby shop when I was traveling. My LHS doesnt have them, but I am going to order them in bottles now. i have the Arta NSX that uses the same color, so i will definitely airbrush that.

This kit fits very well together, but the final fitment of all the engine compartment components is frustrating. Its just slightly off, but with carefull coersing it will fit. the added detail of the photoetch parts makes it that much more tricky when fitting parts. I have knocked several of them off already.

I masked off and painted the black. just waiting an hour or so to remove tape and take pictures. I sprayed it on thicker than I wanted, i hope it didnt go through the tape.

I knew I would screw something up <smileys>295</smileys>

I masked very carefully but forgot to cover the vents from the back.

On the front and rear pieces, there is some black overspray in the vents and window sill. There was a small run spot on the rear.

Also, the wheel wells and underside of the body is not a concern right now, it will be masked again and painted, then wheel wells covered in carbon fiber.

With all the overspray and screw ups, I think it will be easily fixable with a little patience and touchups. I have no more red, so I will need to order more paint. Should have it in a few days.

With my body-painting experience in consideration, I honestly can't complain about these results. I will carefull repair where needed and it should be fine.

Waow !! Everything looks good to me
the paint looks nice, you won't have to polish a lot to get a perfect result.
and the mock-up is simply killing !!
Do you think there is heat shield over the floor under engine block ?
Is the whole floor and undertray made of carbon ?
Can't find any good pictures showing the answer... All pics show a black surface, but impossible to say if it's carbon. :dunno:
same for the front undertray...

the area underneath the engine is covered in heat shielding, i am working on that now.

the wheel wells should be carbon, on the road version they are covered in heavy heat shielding. the inside of the wheel wells are kevlar. if i dont use all my kevlar on the damn seat I may put it in the wheel wells

the trim all around the engine cover, window seals etc will be painted black rubber to simulate rubber seals.

still plenty of work to go but I am on the home stretch

Fantastic build.
Great attention to all those little details.

The cockpit and engine look absolutely gorgeous.
The paintwork looks very good too. I think you did a great job masking the body. It's almost impossible to prevent some overspray or runs, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread!

the new paint came in today, my wife got me the cake foil for heat shielding and the SMS seat belt pieces came in, so I am ready to rock n roll on the rest of it. just waiting for the top studio wheel nuts to finish the wheels and tires.

Looks great, but you really need to "fix" the Brakes, as the rotors are carbon fiber. Just paint them very dark grey(almost Black).

Hemi Killer - the detail on the engine bay looks great - How did you do the couplers on the plumbing for the intake tubing - They look like the real couplers - John

John, they are phot etch pieces that came with the kit. they were very difficult to use, they did not wrap all the way around the tube. they look great when finished but it is tricky to use them.

Hemi Killer - thanks for the information on the plumbing couplers - was there any special technique you found to make it easy to fit them? I have this kit to build and I have a SMS PE set like you have, but I was hoping that SMS would do a full detail kit for this car before I start it. You have done an excellent job so far - I like the shocks - I've bought some from Rob too - also I've got the two different shock sets from Top Studio. You did an excellent job scratching the rear shocks. Did you use wire and teflon tape for your brake ducts? And lastly are you reference pictures for this car digital?? could you possibly email them to me?? I will pay what you want - John

If I'm not mistaken SMS made a full detail kit awhile back for the R390? They also did the Mercedes CLK-GTR and Toyota TS020. They all have since been discontinued.

yes I used teflon and wire for the ducts. However, with the way i did it, the wheels will not fit on the car. You can leave the part I cut off and use that as part of the duct. scratch build the duct and have it come out of that area and it hsould be fine.

I am waiting on top studio wheel nuts to finish the wheels

I used the RB Motion shocks with the extensions for the front, then hacked up some parts for the rear.

Here is an online album i made for the reference photos. If this doesnt work for you let me know and I can send them to you via email. No need for payment. i collected these from the internet, it probably took 20+ hours of straight searching to get all these.

I know of the CLK-GTR and the TSO20 - but not sure if there was a super detail kit for the R-390 can anyone confirm that - John

SMS never did a super kit for the R390, just a PE set that is still available (used in this build). The TS020 and CLK were super kits with turned metal components that are discontinued, but you can still get the Toyota PE.

Soo...I'm back at it. I have been very busy with work, trying to make money. I just stripped the body and its back in primer.

Looks pretty good considering the nightmare I went through with this

I glued everything in place and added the plumbing. I may add more, but I'm not sure yet. I used cake foil for the heat shielding and Top Studio wheel nuts, the car will be displayed with the wheels off.

This week sometime I should be able to paint the main body parts, then I will move on to the smaller stuff. I will also have to detail the undersides of the front end and bonnet and the wheel arches will get carbon fiber.

Im excited to get this done. I have been working on some other projects lately to get me back in the groove.

I didnt cover the vents from the inside and black overspray got on the red. It was in a perfect area that I couldnt reach and clean up. I stripped and repainted. Now I have polished through the black into the red. I have set it aside for a while as I am very frustrated. I will pick it back up soon, but I have to finish something first otherwise I will have a tone of half done models.

A little update. I have lost the drive to complete this build due to all the issues I have had. I will however, be starting over. I will start with a fresh kit and fresh photo etch. My skills have improved over time. I will be using some of the parts from this car that will work well, like the interior tub and most of the engine.

This will allow me to have 4 intake inlets like the real car and also improve the front end, especially the brake ducts and stuff.

I have no idea when I will start the new build, but I will continue in this thread when I do. I definitely want to get this thing done, considering how much detail is possible with this kit.
