I'm doing a build I really love doing ...DTM (Deutsche Touring Masters) but still can't seem to leave the kit alone without modifications(think its the scratch builder in me).
The kit I'm using is the Revell Saltzgitter which will be transformed into the 2008 spec car that some of the teams run, this car is from the 2010 season & decals from Shunko Decals.
This car is driven by David Coulthard(ex F1 driver)& was run in the 2010 season during rounds 1-4 then they changed there livery to Deutsche E-Post.
With this kit I will change at least 6 major things I noticed from the 2008 to the 2009 cars & these are:
1.Side runners(left & right)
2.Front corners on hood(winglets)
3.Rear side panels(top of the winglets)
4.Mirrors
5.Rearwing & mounting position
6.Position of the exhaust outlet
If I find other things to change as I go along I will do so when required,I will also glue the hood in place as I have ideas to use the V8 engine in another DTM modification project to come.
So heres the car I will be building & the kit with the decals.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651101.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651102.jpg

So heres the kit in 2009 spec or OOB sorta say.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651104.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651105.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651106.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651107.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651103.jpg

So the first thing or main thing that will be very noticeable is the side runners & must be changed as they are entirely a different shape from the 2009spec.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651109.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651108.jpg

Where the kit side runners will side there is a groove at the end of the bottom plate, this has to be filled in so I used 0.50mm(20 thou) plastic sheet. The width will also have to be extended too so I used 0.75x0.75(0.30x0.30) strips layed alomg side the bottom plate of the chassis to give the overall width required.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651110.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651111.jpg

I then just cut the end of the kit runners off because that doesnt change at all & fixed them to where they would sit on the chassis & also gives me something to work from.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651114.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651112.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651113.jpg

Once this task is done I start to do the wedge shape on the bottom rear of the belly plateor the front edge of the rear wheel arch.this schampfer is already on the kit so I just used the shape to get the wedge shape right & filled it in with 0.50mm card.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651117.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651118.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651116.jpg

Now I started the inner ducting & used 0.50mm card( I used 0.50mm card on everything) & used ampl of refernce pictures I aquired from the good 'ol internet.
I tried a couple of ways to cut out the inner duct but the 2nd way was easier i found.Once I got the shape I wanted I just capped it off.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651119.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651122.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651117.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651134.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651135.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651136.jpg

I used the .30x.30 to act as a guide on the inner ducts for mounting & also gives it something to bite on.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651121.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651124.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651125.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651123.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651126.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651127.jpg

Now I start the fun part! I started by drawing on paper then transfering the sizes to plastic sheet but took a few attempts to get it right.
So I started with my hieght of the sheet plus the legth I needed & cut it out to 8mm x 77mm & left a couple mm extra in case I have to trim slightly.
I done the left side first then the right because the right side has an oval hole for the exhaust which is capped because the exhaust comes out the rear on the 2008 spec cars so its just a dummy hole or something.
I used the kit part also for sizes I need but had to revert to ref pics to get the angled runner bending at the right place.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651132.jpg
I bent the front ends accordingly to the ref pics & also cut the front edge off then reattached it overlapping to give it the extra edge as in the pics I have.Once I fixed the runners in place I attached little winglets to the rear edges.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651140.jpg

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651146.jpg

Once the side runners are done I put together the shell & make a little mock up of it & also on the last picture I compared it to the 2009 spec car thats in the background.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651147.jpg

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651151.jpg

Now the most important part is done or one of the hardest to get right in my opinion is done I started on the corners of the hood I just used some off cuts & inserted them into the slots where the winglets would go & used plastic filler & sanded smooth.& I'm still working on this at the moment while I start this thread.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/651139.jpg

I noticed that some of the pictures are mixed up but oh well:dunno:

Wow! Great work so far. Definitely subscribed. I've got the same decal set and bought the matching Deutsche Post Yellow paint from Scalefinishes. I was planning on building it (probably not till the FAR future), but I didn't expect there to be that much work involved. Keep up the great work. :iceslolan

Great work and interesting variant of this race car, and may I say not an easy fabrication task with all those curves, angles, scoops and spoilers!!! Looking forward to more updates!!

Great start and excellent subject, DTM cars do it for mew as well. Did not know the decals were around for this car, i may have to look at getting the kit and decals myself.

thanks for the comments folks!
Anyway I finished off the front ends of the hood after filling in where the winglets would go,I just used scrap plastic offcuts to fill in most of the hole then used white plastic model filler.
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221101.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221102.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221123.jpg

Once filled in I sprayed with primer to look for imperfections.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221119.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221120.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221121.jpg

Another thing on the hood I noticed was that where the clip that holds the hood in place was that on the kit they don't have the edge showing so here I just etched the panel line in.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221122.jpg

Now I started on the rear side panels. Here I noticed that the top wing is lower & has one of those winglets less than the 2009 spec car so I adjusted it accordingly.

I started by filling in the groove where the existing part goes & filled it in with filler & sanded it flat.I could've went with this idea when making the new part fit(which will be lower down & would have to grove the new part out) but opted for the shaping of the wing top & trimmed the upper part that is lower of the groove as marked in pencil.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221105.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221106.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221107.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221104.jpg

I also drilled out the hole where they stick the airline to lift the jacks up that are under the car during pit stops & also used a 0.3 drill bit to represent the bolts holes, when the cars painted they will be picked out with a black wash similar to the doors, hood etc.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221110.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221109.jpg

Now onto the white winglet of the kit itself,I studied the pics & noticed that the winglet is there but just has to be lowered & on the side there is grooves where the kit parts go so I don't even have to measure it out for cutting,I'm only taking off the 1st little winglet so the top part is more parallel than the 2009 spec.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221103.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221108.jpg

I just cut it back into the back then placed plastic card to fill the gap then trimmed around the body contour & placed a small piece of 0.30x0.30 strip in its place along the front edge & filed down so to blend in the modified wing on top.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221112.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6221111.jpg

Once this task is complete I repeated for the other side,as you can see the colour(suppose I better spell color right for the North Americans lol) of the new wing part is a darker shade of white.

A little weekend update.
I started the rear wing well actually filling in the where the rear wing attaches to the body,I filled in the top & down the trunk(boot) & started to cut out the slots for the rear wing uprights.
I was going to cut the rear bumper off then cut up the slot from the bottom but I thought I would screw it up because the bottom edge of the trunk has a slight curve.
I opted for the multi drill holes along the slot which goes to about three quarter the way up where the license plate goes,I noticed that where the top of the wing uprights come out is the height that the lic. plate sits & thus is the top of the slot.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0966.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0967.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0968.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0970.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0971.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/HPIM0972.jpg

So while this drys & hardens & prep this for the primer layer to look for imperfections I looked at the rear of the belly plate where the diffusers are,On the 2008 spec car they have 4 diffusers when the 2009 car only has 2 so of course I have to add 2 more on the outsides.Because I'm adding thin card I just thinned down the existing diffusers down a bit along with the other lower winglets etc.

I'm getting loads done this weekend!
Ok I'm doing the rear wing now.
Once this major part is done I can get to the building of the car as per the kit but once I've fine tuned the holes with filler etc.
So heres a pic of the rear wing,it's the best pic I have of the 2008 spec car.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/DeutschePost29.jpg

Heres the kit rear wing which is almost what I require but not right enough.
First of all I have to remove the 2009 spec wing uprights & clean it up.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261101.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261102.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261103.jpg

I then attached 2 small pieces of plastic card about 3mm x 6mm in line with the 2 small parts that already exist on the wing & place them inline with each other, the card size I need is actually is 5.5mm but I took the curve from the wing into consideration so it has to be trimmed accordingly to suit the underneath of the upper wing & the top of the lower wing its going to sit on.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261104.jpg

Once in place I attached the lower wing on & done some final adjustments to get the shape right.Once I attached the lower wing I realized that the CF decals still have to go on but its glued now oh well so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it but shouldn't be a problem.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261109.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261110.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261111.jpg

Now I started on the lower uprights that come out the trunk.
I simply stuck in a length of card about 6mm in diameter & went from there,The end width came out to about 4mm but where it touches the wing underneath it tapers off slightly then just trimmed the top to suit the under part of the lower part of the wing.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/gasdriverca/Deutsche%20Post%20Mercedes%20C%20Class/6261113.jpg

Once complete I used tape to attach it to the car to see if my guesstimates are correct & to see if the sizes are relevant to the scale.I actually used the drawing from the decals which is approx 1:43 scale so I scaled it up to 1:24.

Thanks Shunter I can't wait to get the colour on it neither.

A few more updates, this time I'm buzzing around on different things here.
1st of all don't you hate it when you knock over your plastic weld on your worktop!!! :banghead: & I normally have a little pile of offcuts lying on my table to used to fill gaps & such so of course it turned into a pile of goo :icon_cry:

anyway enough of the waterworks & lets get down to business.
Like I said at the start of this thread that I'm going to glue the hood down on this build so I won't need the engine detail, but what i noticed as I was assembling the front end was that you could see day light through to the other side.So I decided to construct the shape of the engine sort of a dummy engine from scraps I have in my scrap box, because the rear is different I noticed that you will be able to see the engine through from the rear aswell.

I built up the kit engine then cut off the gearbox which will be attached to the dummy engine that lacks detail as I have ideas for another DTM project later with this V8.
So here we have the dummy along side the kit engine less the gearbox,I used strips of 2.5mm x 8mm on the bottom for the engine block & on the sides is 1mm x 11.1mm cut to 24mm lengths, then for the headers I used square tubing from 6.4mm or 1/4" plastruct cut at the required angle to give the V8 shape & capped with a piece of 1mm card cut to size.

Then underneath the headers I filled it in with filler & sanded it down.

Then once done I attached the gearbox to the dummy engine then laid inside with the running gear & transaxle but not fixed in place yet.

So still working at the front I noticed I need to support the hood with the brackets of the original parts,I cut out the supports & worked them to fit beside the new side runners or fairing I had done.

Onto the rear, the rear is mostly covered so I had to eliminate this because the exhaust come out the rear as you can see in the rear wing pic I posted earlier.I still kept the side by just cutting off the base then attaching the rear sides on where they would normally sit & I also need them for the insides of the rear side diffuser thingys that had been altered earlier, the rear ends also had to be trimmed & cut square.
