Tamiya Peugeot 205 T16 Monte Carlo

I grew up in the Waikato area of New Zealand, and as a teenager remember these wonderful Group B cars blasting around the very roads I was learning to drive on.
I started this model last month and thought I would share a few WIP photos with you. Many thanks to Phil who supplied me with some fantastic photos of the real thing. I have recently returned to modelling after a 25 year break. So lots to learn. Can't justify an air-brush yet, so excuse the fine details. And apologies for the camera work (some of the model photos on this site are extraordinary).

Decided to add Ari and his co-driver. I think however that this is Panizzi with a different helmet. Didn't feel up to removing the visor, so not historically correct. Decided that Terry Harryman wore adidas!

Thanks, Phil. Your photos have really helped me flesh out the engine bay. It's the first time I've really tried adding wiring and tubing.
Bit concerned about how much weathering I should attempt on the exterior though. Will probably keep it minimal.

not many people make it doing a realistic wheathering of Monte Carlo's cars. you mostly need black and dark brown to weather it when most modelers use light dust-like colors... But snow and cars running through quickly make roads becoming black wet mud soup covered !!
I must have some pics of the helmets too, if not wrong they had on their sides the same Peugeot-Talbot-Sport logo than cars have on front fenders and hood.

Wow, for your first car after that long of a break, this is starting out pretty good. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Almost ready to add decals now.
To fit the body needs a bit of stretching. I would hate to crack the shell or pop out a window at this point.
Wheels have had a bit of weathering added too.
This is not my first model since returning to the hobby. Did a 917k at xmas and a Lotus 18 after that. Will try to post pictures for those too.

Finished the rear hatch decals last night. Thin and strong, so went on great. Micro-sol helped too.
Two problems though.
#1. The instructions gave the 'Peugeot' writing to be close to the centre. This morning I checked a photo from the '85 Monte and it showed the lettering was over to the left. Damn.
#2. The classic 'Rally Monte Carlo' banner was thin enough to show thru the black decal on the window. My advice to anyone else doing this model would be to place some white over the window before placing the Monte decal.

Tough luck with the decal position.
On the other hand, only people with extensive knowledge on this subject (Phil, that's you) will notice this. So I suppose it's not so dramatic.

Impressive build you're showing here. I like it.

There's another thing I noticed with these 205 T16 decals, don't know if you did too, but the white isn't perfectly white and seems more cream white than pure white...
That's a pain especially for the door rally plates over white body...
Is it too late to move the "peugeot" writing to the left ? Having the pic under the eyes I can understand it's frustrating not having put the decal perfectly in place...
More than knowing or not I don't really trust building iunstructions and always try to verify as much as possible the decals placing. That's where my knowledges not so extended than that come from. ;)

Finished decals over the weekend. They went on brilliantly. Little bit of micro-sol and voila. Not like the Fujimi Porsche 917 ones I did early this year. They were so fragile.
These photos are the Peugeot looking show-room fresh, so will post my weathering attempts in the completed section.
Next model will be either Lancia Stratos Ailtalia or a Morgan 4/4 for my Dad (he raced one in the 50's)

About the rear Monte-Carlo red plate.

I think this plate is a thin rigid sheet of metal.

So it will be better, for a next buil-up, to decal it on a piece of in-form plastic or metal and try to do the little black tape which glue it to the body and the rear windshield.
Pehraps this rear plate is also rivetted to the body.
It was an usual way to fit this kind of sheet metal in those times.

And it should be the same for the front one by the way, both plates were made of metal.
The front one could be taped to the hood, most of the time pictures allow to verify it as they mostly used large black tape, and ayway it is visible when taped.



I can't wait to see the car with its weathered look !! :naughty:
But be informed that if you do it too perfectly you'll have to build a dirorama around it !! :iceslolan :iceslolan :rofl:

The Peugeot is up on the completed board now.
It's funny that when you finish a model you almost want to do it again, but improve all the small niggles.
