Any advise on replacing plug wires on a '98, 3.0L Windstar? Is it best to remove the cowling behind the hood, to be able to work from the top?

this all started with a missing engine, trouble code P0302 (misfire in #2 cylinder). went to check the plug (from below), and the wire was pretty much crumbling in my hand. (130K miles).
