what would cause the cylinder 5 to look like it got hot???

ok so I finally got around to talking off the heads...

turns out that they are warped... mostly on the rear head

but basically the exhaust valve on cylinder 5 is CRAZY clean, it looks like it was steam cleaned or something... (the left side cylinder, on the rear bank)

the other thing is the bore on that cylinder looks like it got REALLY hot... maybe black or purple...

If I recall correctly that cylinder is last on the fuel rail...

could this be caused by overheating... or could it BE THE CAUSE of the overheating?

any ideas?

I've heard that coolant leaking into the cylinder makes a great cleaner....

yes if the cylinder is burning coolant(bad h/gasket)you will see it as being clean
resurface/repair the head, making sure guides & seals are done
would'nt be a bad idea to do the other head
Good luck

So you steam cleaned your cylinder head by running it with the blown head gasket and water you used to as coolant leaking in....

Get the heads worked over, but dont spend a lot, 3400 heads are everywhere. Then check fuel pressure once you get it running.

I wonder why that coolant/combustion gas tester didn't work.....

well the gas tester looks for combustion gas in the coolant... but it was going coolant into the combustion camber... not the other way around

Yes but the combustion pressure in the chambor is much higher than the 15psi in the cooling system.

yes but sometimes they can blow the gasket and the break acts like a check valve
