Shock Tip

About 2 years ago, I replaced my factory shocks to Monroe Senstrac shocks, the part numbers specifically to be used on the base model Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. I never really liked them as I thought they offered too stiff a ride.

I did not realize how much these shocks sucked until I couldn't take it anymore and installed new Motorcraft shocks. I did not go with the base model options as since I did my first shock replacement, I stiffened up the suspension slightly.

I opted for the Motorcraft ASH-1 front shocks which are specific to the Handling & Performance Package equipped vehicles and ASHV-9 for the rear which are specific to heavy duty police applications.

The ASH-1 front shocks are the right balance of firmness and absorbing road shock. The only other front suspension change I made was install MOOG front sway bar bushing as opposed to the factory rubber ones.

The rear ASHV-9 shocks also seems perfect for my needs. I needed the shocks stiffer because I have an Airlift 1000 airbag kit installed in my rear springs to increase rear ride height by about 1" and allow the carriage of more weight without sagging. Softer shocks allowed the rear end to bounce alot more, but now it feels much more planted and still absorbs the road like it was meant to. I also installed a 17mm rear sway bar with ENS and MOOG bushings and end links and aluminum rear control arms with polyurethane bushings.

Just a note to those who don't want their teeth falling out. Spend the extra $20 and buy Motorcraft shocks. Monroes are garbage. Also, I found that one of my Monroe shocks had been leaking oil and there are only 20,000 miles on them.

Thanks for the tip BF. Just today I was thinking about changing out the originals since the ride is sort of like sitting on big marshmallow. It's just way too smooth. I also swore off Monroe after poor results on my pickup. So if I decide to put in some shocks I will probably follow your advice.Thx-
