My 92 camary started to give me a hard time starting and had a very bad sputtering problem and when coming to a stop would shut off and then would have to sit there for awhile till it would start:banghead:. After replacing plugs wires cap and rotor fuel pump and fuel filter it still wasnt fixed:runaround:. Finally i changed the temp sensor and coil inside the distributor and that fixed the problem:) just wanted to share with eveyone before you start replacing all these parts try your temp sensor first and coil . Hope this helps every one with theres. FrankC

Thanks for the post. Just wondering, did the coil you replaced look like the plastic insulation was cracked? That's a common problem that can give you the symptoms you describe. When it's cracked, the coil shorts itself to ground on any metal inside the distributor. This produces a weak or no sprak condition. Also, how many miles were on the car when this happened?

Don't feel bad throwing money at those parts, it was probably time.

Thanks - for the fix!

I didnt see any cracks on the coil but doesnt mean there where none sometimes you dont see the hair line cracks also car has almost 100,000 miles and it was the original coil also changed the temp sensor which i heard could be a problem. And it was an older lady that owned the car i have bunch of reciepts of work she did she really kept up on her tune ups and oil changes car runs awesome just the Buffalo weather really took a toll on the body very rusty. Thanks EZFrank

A failing ECT sensor is a common cause for hard starting and rough idle when cold. But when a ignition coil fails, it's usually all or nothing. Even if it tests within specs, the spark is weak enough to not allow the car to start.

My only hope is that you replaced the coil with an OEM brand (Toyota/Denso). They last MUCH longer than the parts store brand...which is important since they don't come with any warranty. If not, then I'd carry a spare OEM coil to swap out when 40k miles roll by.

Hope this helps!

EZFrank,
I am glad you solved the probelm. My daugther's car, a camry 1996, has the same problems as your '92, but after replacing all those parts you listed, the problems still continues.

Any other suggestions would be gretaly appreciated.
thank you all.

Try cleaning up the IAC valve next. When this sticks, it can also cause hard starting and rough idle when warm.
