A new year and time to make another dream Model Car.

I will make the ModelFactory Hiro Porsche 917 Long Tail 24h Le Mans 1970 No.3 Psychadelic.

It was arround 1,5 years ago when i have contacted Model Factory Hiro, why they did not make a detailed Porsche 917.
Kyoko of Model Factory Hiro sayd yes but we need some pictures.
No problem i have more than 2000 pictures which i copyd on a cd and send them to Hiro.

The result is that Model Factory Hiro came out with this kit first them the 1971 Versions and also now available the Pink Pig. Hope they wil also make the 917K Versions.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6436346534353261.jpg

Thats the story behind this incredible Kit which Model Factory Hiro made.
And i am proud to be part of it.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3037313365363936.jpg

If someone dont know the kit is in scale 1/24.

I have started with the Body. First i cut out the doors.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6138626232633863.jpg

Then i cleaned all the body parts.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6535653762626431.jpg

2. Step i clean the Rollcage parts and glue them together.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3463336138383730.jpg

Some parts on the Rollcage are missing specially for inside the roof. I will use some solder wire and make them sratch in a next step.

Main parts of the engine are together.

Dashboard

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6134653734386364.jpg

Hiro made nice parts for the engine and airintake trumpets by clear resine.
Makes look them like Fiberglass.
I have modyfied them by drilled all holes open.

...and that's another thread I'll have to keep an eye on! That's an impressive-looking kit of parts there - and an interesting connection you have to the project. Looking forward to seeing this come together, I think.

Man, I envy you. I have filed for a permission to my fiancée to purchase this kit since its release. Got rejected multiple times already. I will watch your build closely with a lot of jealousy.

Zero Paints makes the correct paint color for this car. Get some from Hiroboy.

Thanks for information. This color is with me already 2 months, same art of color i also sell. For me the best art of color to use for modelcars...

Nice start on a cool car. I'll follow :-)
I broke my own vow and ordered the kit two weeks ago... and i'm working on the 1:43 version right now :-)
I have my doubts about the Zero paint. I have it and for my taste it's a bit too purple. I'll tweak that. Don't wanna start another burple discussion though :-)

kind of off topic, but do you know who the artist is for that first image in your thread?

There was a painting done years ago that i remember in that same style of a Jaguar XJR9-LM that i've wanted to buy for a long time, but i haven't been able to find it again.

Many thanks!

I google a little bit and found this page:

http://www.hlbergandi.com/gallery_porsche917.html

It is a Mr. Hector Luis Bergandi.
Go to Gallery you will find more drawings...

First paint job is done.

@jaykay
You are right about the zero paint color, at the first sight it looks like the color is too bright. But i risk to use it cause i knew from other colors before i painted that the true color will show when its paint and also some when clear coat is on.
I was right the color is exactly the one it should be....:iceslolan:iceslolan
The color also have a little effect depends on what kind of light.
With daylight the color is more bright but not pink, exactly the same which we can see on pictures from the real car. With Spotlight the color comes more to Violet blue and with daylight but inside a room it becomes more darker.
I really like this color.I can tell all you can use this Zero Paint color its perfect.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3765306530656435.jpg

For all the parts i used Mr.Surfacer 1200 primer, then i painted the main color. All made with Airbrush gun.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6235393539396133.jpg

Here you can see the color by daylight but inside a room so its more dark.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6566633636386438.jpg

For the Rear floor from the body there is this clear part together with the white.
This one:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6535653762626431.jpg

The clear parts are tricky, cause how do i paint the white part and let the clear to be clear.
After a moment i have the idea to use liquid mask. Its like a liquid silikon which will be brushed on the part which have to be covered.
After 30 minutes the parts look like a women with silikon clothes...:smokin:
Sorry i am a man and have to say that.....:evillol:
When all the paint jobs are done you can take the silikon off and have a naked wo..., parts..:smooch: This way is much better then to tape it,cause it have many corners and too much tape to use.

No problem i have more than 2000 pictures which i copyd on a cd and send them to Hiro.

Great progress of a fantastic kit, that is probably one of my next projects (i have it already lying at home). Thanks for the info of the Hiro paint!!!
Is it possible to get a copy (CD) or kind of download-Link of these pictures or at least a choice of some detail shots from the inside of that car (Cockpit, wiring of electronic boxes, dashboard, seat, harness,.... and also the engine compartment where the"spare-tyre" is mounted,....) as i could not find some desired pics in the web of that specific areas.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

The Gordon Wingrove book ' Porsche 917 The Undercover Story' is particularly useful for reference photos of the long-tail 917's - plenty of new shots of the Martini 917LH and some of the 'Hippy' car. Worth getting a copy if you're into the 917, and not too expensive compared with many recent Porsche books...

Thanks for that info. I try to get a copy of that book and will see. I just made the experience in the past, that most books (if not all),( independent of the manufacture or car that is covered or focused) do not have the detail shots I am looking for. Most of the books have fantastic information about history and may have great shots from outside or some detail but dont show the detail pics and areas that may be of interest for the "crazy" model builder. (especially if the intention is to improve a kit with more details).
But may be i am wrong this time.
I still hope that someone will ( is willing) to share his pictures of the mentioned areas. (Martini Version is also very welcome, if there are any differences at all INSIDE )

Nice progress Roger! This is my favorite MFH kit. The engine contains over 200 parts by itself! Allan, another builder that frequents this site used Tamiya TS57 Blue-Violet to good affect. It's a bit bluer but also looks good on this car. I don't have an opinion on whats supposedly correct. I think there is a lot of room to interpret the old photos with whatever color you like personally.

Ok, you need pictures i can send you a CD with all the pictures.
The book Scratch Built talking about is good, its this one:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6632626334336662.jpg

You have some good pictures in the book like this ones,

I will post now a few of the pictures i have, which are really helpfull if you want to go very deep in detailling your modelcar.
They are also very helpfull to Model Factory Hiro, and as i see the parts, they did an excellent job.

Ok, you need pictures i can send you a CD with all the pictures.
The book Scratch Built talking about is good, its this one:

Thank you very much for these pictures. The first pics exactly show the area of my interest, of which i need more details. The engine pics (solo, out of the car) i already got. but exactly the surrounding areas of engine (tubing ,spare tire, cockpit and coloring of these areas/parts especially on the Psycho car or Martini 917LH version is what i am looking for.
-PM send-

keep in mind that the grey interieurcolor is not original, but after or from a rebuild 917
original they would not paint these areas (weight reduction=safing fuel) and would be the brownish yellow color of glassfiber

Hi everyone...

Ok, i have to say sorry for my long absent here. I had hard times in my life to be solved first, so i had to make decitions what is priority.

I have worked the last 2 months on this project and it is finished already, but i have make a lot of pictures and thats why i will just continue the thread where i stop before.

For me it is also important that the peoples here will learn something.

Ok, the first thing i had to do is cleaning all the body parts from dust...

I have decided to make everything open on this model which is possible and i also decided to make evrything dirty and used, for me the model looks more as a real car like this.

Another problem was about the interieur, in the build plan it is written to paint it gray. But i have some pictures from this car where you can see all is Fiberglas. Soi decided to make it more difficult to build and choose the fiberglas Version.

I was never really shure that this car was really painted gray inside during the race, but after the build i got some pictures from a friend which proof that the car was gray painted.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6463353964393534.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3937326533666262.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6365353339663166.jpg

As soon as i found the other pictures with the gray interieur at race time i will post them here.

ok, when i restarted the build i did not make so many pictures i just start where i start.

With the engine.

I added many many parts which i saw on the pictures of the original engine i have.

So i did not count exactly the parts, but for shure they are all together more than 500 parts, amazing. Already the engine is like a complete kit.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3635613965366662.jpg

For the fiberglas i used valejo colors dry brush with diffrent light brown flesh colors, MIG rust washing and also pergament white of valejo, there are many step to make until i got the result i want to have.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3836653431626530.jpg

This is the first washing step.

Just that you have not to ask, yes you are not drunk, i make 3 engines at the same time.
1 for the model a second one for the enginestand and the 3, for the Sunoco 917/30 Can am.

Here ist the 917/30 engine.

After the washing was dry, i light it up again with a very light yellow brown and at the end with pergament withe, only very light dry brush.

Amazing effect, what is possible just with colors.

Fantastic work and great detail, wonderful!! bravo!!

Please take this observation well meaning, as suggestion to improve on your fine model
The small bands holding the tube frame to the floor, are actually fiberglass bands glued by resin in place on real car
In your reference photos they show grey only because the whole interior was painted grey paint at some point over the bare fiberglass areas
In your model, bands show different coloring (silver) from bare floor coloring, so your bands painted look like tape, and not the fiberglass bands they actually should be

Perhaps might look better to be matched to same coloring as bare floor?

Again, love the workmanship, really great! :)

edit: Hard to find photo of bare floor example, here is a great set of videos of a 917 restoration, and some images I mean contained within :)

@Midmazar

The kit is arround 280 Euro.

@Jeremy Jon

Thanks for the tip. There are many things i would make diffrent today because every day i am learning more about the 917 cars. But the model is already finish for arround 1 1/2 months. i just post here my pictures from the build.
Today i also got pictures from the race at Le Mans 1970 where i can see that this car was painted gray inside the cockpit and also in the engineroom. But i have postet pictures where you can see this car totaly fiberglas. So it is not completely wrong.
I have always this luck that i get the correct pictures when the build is done already, even if i searched many hours before.

I can live with this. At my build time i had the choice to make it gray or fiberglas. I have pictures of the cockpit with gray color, but i was not able to see if its the Long tail or the 917K which also existe with the same body color. So i decided to make the fiberglas version. where i was shure it is the long tail.

By the way, for modelling the fiberglas is more interesting to realise, it was a great experience to learn more about painting technics.
Incredible effects are possible.

Making tubes for the steering.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/6630353432663332.jpg

First i took wire as shown, then ad bare metal foil.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/20/673120/3739383262316461.jpg

After i took it from the rod away and move the part in position and paint.

Another thing was the liquid visible for the pedal hydraulics.
I just drilled a hole in from the underside. Then paint one with clear yellow and the other with brown washing. then glue a round clear part to close the hole, finish and great effect. Lokks like real.
