Camry pulls to left while heavy brakingGTS767 01-15-2011, 08:44 PM 1997 camry 4 cyclinder Auto, just replaced both forward brake calipers and front brake pads. Bled the system well, however, car still pulls to the left. After drinving it a couple of miles and feeling the rotors, I noticed that the left rotor is not as hot as the right side brake rotor. The right side which is the pax side is really hot even when if I do not apply heavy brakes after driving some distance. Also I noticed when I removed the old brake pads, that the drivers side brake pads are twice worn off as the passenger right side brake pads. It is a bit confusing when the driver left side seems to be doing most of the braking, but not getting as hot as the right side. It seems that the right side gets so hot that it loses its braking power. Any other parts I should be replacing. Any assistance would be appreciated.:) Mike Gerber 01-16-2011, 11:20 AM You right side caliper is probably sticking, applying some constant brake pressure to that rotor. This heats up both the pad and rotor (and may even cause the brake fluid to boil on that side) and causes the right side brake to be weaker then the left side. Then under heavy braking, the left side provides most of the stoping power and the car pulls to that side. Assuming the pulling was there before you replaced the calipers, I would inspect the slide pins on the right side and make sure they are sliding freely. If you find one or both of those pins rusted in place, remove the pin from the mounting bracket and clean up both the pin and hole in the mounting bracket, if at all possible. Some times the pins are too rusted and have to be replaced. Then lube both the slide pin(s) and the hole(s) in the mounting bracket with high temperature disc brake grease or antiseize compound. If that doesn't solve the problem, you may have a collapsed brake hose on that right side. The hose can collapse internally and block the brake fluid from relieving brake hydraulic pressure on that caliper. I'm not sure of any tests to check that brake hose other than replacing it to test it out. (Maybe someone else here knows of a test.)I would check for a stuck slide pin first, since that is more common. Mike GTS767 01-18-2011, 01:58 PM Sounds great and concur with your logic, as I did replace the right caliper a year ago, but did not replace the sliding pins, and I believe this is when it all started. Thanks Mike and I will reinspect this weekend and post back findings. George GTS767 01-19-2011, 11:35 AM Mike, Thanks so much for the info above. It worked. I found the two pins at the brake caliper you mentioned were completely siezed and it was a pain to get them out. I put in replacement pins and all seems normal. Mike Gerber 01-19-2011, 03:03 PM Thanks for the follow-up. Glad I could help. Mike Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
