94 camry dies while drivingTechniec 12-08-2010, 01:44 PM Hi I have a problem with a 94 camry 4door V6 3.0 XLE I bought 2 weeks ago. It has 142k miles. 2 days after I bought, I got off the freeway, was gonna take the next turn to get to my apts complex and all of a sudden the engine just shuts off. I took it to a trusted mechanic I know and these are the codes that came up ( P0100, P0110 P1600). Then he said the ECM was the culprit. Changed the ECM for a new one, then the next day, took it to work, and it died right after I got off the freeway. Problem is, it used to die whenever the engine light comes on, now I can drive it smooth when it comes on, like normal, then the battery light, oil light and another one come up then it dies. Have to wait like 1mns to drive it again for about 3 to 5mn, then it'll die again. Took it back to my mechanic, did a diagnosis and now only one code shows up, P1300. He told me it could be an igniter or spark plugs problem, but he checked the spark plug and told me that was fine. I'm so lost, but I believe I can get good help from you guys, that's why I took the time to register to your forums. Techniec 12-08-2010, 03:21 PM No replies :( ? Mike Gerber 12-08-2010, 03:39 PM I have never delt with this specific code, but it is listed as: "P1300 Igniter Circuit Malfunction - No. 1." What has the mechanic suggested you do? Mike Techniec 12-08-2010, 04:20 PM Thanks for replying Mike. Well basically he told me to bring the car tomorrow while he gets through the researches today. He also told me that if the igniter is bad, then it's bad all the way through, the car won't even start. It's really weird, he tightened up the spark plugs and the socket, since then the car has been running fine. I'm just gonna wait and see, i'm sure it will die again sooner or later. Just wanted some help with that "code P1300" if it can be anything else besides the igniter on some other cases. Mike Gerber 12-09-2010, 01:56 PM One more thought. You don't say how many miles are on this car, but as they rack up lot's of miles on them the coil inside the distributor can cause problems, expecially when the engine heats up. Has your mechanic checked the coil for being in spec? Has he removed it from the distributor and inspected it for cracks. This is a common problem for the first 3 generations of Camry; those generations that used a coil. Mike Techniec 12-09-2010, 07:58 PM Thanks for replying mike. I don't think my car has a distributor, from what I have read I believe this generation of camrys has Ignition Coils. I may be wrong. But guess what, it just died on me again. I just found what causes the problem. Well not the culprit, but what makes the engine shut off. When the temperature gauge hits the middle, when the engine is relatively hot, for example driving on the freeway for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, the engine light comes on and it shuts off. I have to open the hood, leave it like that for about 20mns for the engine to cool off, then it will drive fine again. Now I have to go to work driving on the street, if I go on the freeway, whenever I get off of it, %90 guarantee that it will shut off. What do you think is the problem? Car has 142k miles on it. Mike Gerber 12-09-2010, 10:29 PM First, I believe your 94 does have a coil inside the distributor. I still would suggest your mechanic check that first, based on your mileage and the fact that it's a common problem and it is fairly easy to check with the specs from any manual and a digital volt/ohmeter. Another thing that can cause problems as the car heats up is a weak fuel pump. Your mechanic can check fuel pressure with a gage and some fittings that are necessary to connect to your car's fuel rail. (Toyotas don't have a schrader valve to attach a gage to the fuel rail.) Your mechanic can attach fittings to the fuel rail to check fuel pressure and then take readings both cold and hot. Mike Techniec 12-09-2010, 11:29 PM Thanks, I will let him know about these possibilities tomorrow. I'll keep you updated. Thank you so much for your time and replies. Hope we will find a solution to this. Techniec 12-10-2010, 12:24 PM SO here's a quick update. Car runs fine on the streets, but as soon as the temperature gauge hits near the middle, when the engine is hot the light comes on and it shuts off. THen I have to let it cool off for about 30mns to be able to drive it again. It starts fine all the time, I just talk to my mechanic and he said that was the igniter. I wanna go buy one today, but I just wanna make sure cause I read online that if the igniter is bad, the car will have trouble firing up. And this is not the case for my car. Techniec 12-10-2010, 02:57 PM I'm pretty sure it's not the ignitor, because the car never had a problem starting. This should be something related to the coolant or whatever help the engine run when it's blazing hot, because every time the engine reaches a certain temperature, it needs to shut off to cool off. Please help me. danielsatur 12-10-2010, 04:24 PM It doesn't fire when Hot! Techniec 12-10-2010, 06:33 PM It fires up, I can drive it for about 10 to 15sec, then it shuts off. But it will always fire up. Techniec 12-11-2010, 08:21 PM Great forums and great help guys, feel sorry for myself for wasting my time registering and seeing that people don't really care. I'll check another forum thanks! danielsatur 12-12-2010, 12:12 PM Make sure you rule of the catalytic converter, because a plugged cat with choke an engine out after a few mins of run.
