scraping soundjarwulf 12-06-2010, 12:46 PM Yo, whenever I'm driving my camry 99 4 cylinder I sometimes hear this scratching sound. It comes and goes, I can't figure out exactly what it is. It sometimes starts when I'm driving straight sometimes when I'm turning and it usually (stops) when I'm applying the brakes. Any ideas? Also how often should I replace the brake pads. And I have no head for auto stuff so any suggestions for finding a good honest mechanic online around the so cal area? danielsatur 12-06-2010, 01:40 PM 80% of the braking is put on the front breakes. Semi Metallic brake pads will make noise, and eat rotors. Call around, and see if you can get a free brake inspection. How many miles do you think you got on your Brakes? Mike Gerber 12-06-2010, 03:53 PM As far as finding a good mechanic you can ask freinds for a recommendation, or go to Car Talk's website and check out their mechanics flies. These are mechanics recommened by Car Talk's listeners. They are sorted by zip code. The scraping is usually from the wear tabs on the brake pads, letting you know they are almost used up. However, if they have worn unevenly, there could be wear damage to the rotors as well. Wish I could help you on the mechanic part, but Mike's suggestion is a good one. But make sure they inspect, service, and lube the whole system and not just slap on a new set of pads. If they have to replace parts, ask to see the old parts. Better places even walk you out on the floor and let them point out what is wrong before they start work...though many don't any more due to liability issues. Can't hurt to ask. Good luck!
