Has anyone replaced their rear defroster switch in the dash with a toggle before? It appears impossible to find one in a junk yard these days. Not sure what type of toggle to get and which wire to put on which place on a replacement switch. I did get the wiring diagram. Thanks guys for any info.

I replaced that switch on my 92 LX with a relay and two miniature pushbuttons. The relay handles the currrent to the defrost matrix - which is several amps. One pushbutton is a normally open one that is momentarily closed when you push it - and turns the relay on when you do so. The relay holds itself on, being wired to the fuse that supplies the voltage for the defroster (which is only on when the ignition is on), and keeps the defroster matrix on. The other button is a normally closed pushbutton. It is also the momentary type. If you push that button it breaks the 12 volt feed to the relay coil, which shuts off voltage to the matrix. Shutting the ignition off also shuts down the relay, so it turns itself off automatically when you shut the car down. The control current for keeping the relay on is only about 20 milliamps - so the pushbuttons should last a long time.

I got the 20 amps relay from ebay for about $5, and the two pushbuttons from RadioShack, for about $5 for three of each kind. I connected the indicator light in the non-working original switch assembly so I would know when the defroster matrix was on.
I have other 2nd gen LX Escorts, the defroster switch of one of them is giving me trouble and will get the same sort of homemade control. The other one will get it when the defroster switch dies - as Im sure it eventually will.

Just curious-where is the relay? In the switch housing?

There is plenty of room for the relay in the space behind the cluster bezel, just to the right of the original switch location. The relay connector came with wires about 6" long on it. The mini pushbutton switches fit into the original switch; the part you pushed down on to turn the defroster on. Sorry I dont have a photo, the car is in VA, while we are in TX for the winter.

Thanks a ton for the description. What type of relay do you get?

The relays I bought years ago on ebay, they were just like these:
ebay # 350419312035.
The switches look like these:
ebay # 110617522178 and 110621774073

Lots of different venders sell each of these things. I just ordered more of the mini push buttons from www.allelectronics.com, for about $.40 each + shipping.
I like having the different colored caps. Red to turn things on, black to turn things off. The relays I got came with the connectors.
