Engine choking (2005 Corolla CE)

Started the car in the morning (with about 40F outside) to warm up. The engine started fine, in about a minute really started to choke. Shut it down, restarted. No problem after that, no warning lights, nothing at all.
Owned it since the purchase (new). 48K, regularly maintained, no accidents, runs absolutely fine, nothing like this happened before.

If this is of any use, got a full tank yesterday (85, this is our 'regular' in CO), right before leaving it for the night. Any ideas? Could this be related to the faulty ECU being recalled now (I didn't get a replacement yet)? Just to repeat, the engine didn't spontaneously shut down, it started choking and coughing.
