2000 GP has growling in the rearend

As I start driving down the highway, the rear end of my GP is very noisy. It sounds like noisy tires or brakes dragging. I got 2 new tires on the back, but it is still there. The rotors seem to be smooth on the outside anyway, so I don't think it's the brakes. Any suggestions? As long as the wheels are moving, you can hear it....it gets louder the faster you go.

Have you checked the rear hubs/bearings out. How many miles do you have?

It has 128,000 miles. I guess the rear bearing is my first suspicion. Will the wheel move a little bit if you rock it back & forth? How much does it usually cost to replace a bearing?

There should be not much movement, if it is 1/16 of an inch or more replace the wheel hub (actually the real measurement is .005" but you'll need a dial indicator), the price of the replacement should be about $350 plus labor according to my "OnDemand" estimator disc.

Best regards,

Oscar.

A replacement wheel bearing shouldn't be anymore than $150. $350 would be about the right price WITH labor. A wheel bearing is a fairly easy DIY job. If you pay someone to do it, i believe labor is 2.5 hours.

Sorry if my numbers were too high, as stated before I took that data from "Mitchell OnDemand"...

Best regards,

Oscar

Welcome to AF

Your car sounds like me if I eat Taco Bell,. I agree with the other posters that your issue is a rear hub. Once you get the rear brakes off, it's held to the rear spindle by 4 bolts, unplug the ABS wire harness, and it's in you hand. If you can do brakes, you can do a rear hub.
