The boot keeps the grease in and the dirt out of the CV joint. If the boot is torn, the grease is contaminated with dirt and it will destroy the joint very quickly. A split boot kit and a packet of grease is NOT the answer, (the joint won't last). For about the same money you'll spend on a new boot and a joint, you could buy a complete half shaft, (axle) assembly, with all new joints and boots, ($60.00)!

There's a fair amount of work involved to replace the axle. Remove the following: Wheel, caliper & pads, caliper bracket, rotor, axle nut, ABS sensor connector and bracket holding the wire to the upper control arm, lower shock mount bolt, separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle, push the axle inward to disengage it from the hub, swing the knuckle assembly out of the way, remove the axle from the differential carrier. You can gain a little more room if you remove the hub assembly from the knuckle, there's only 3 bolts, but it's not necessary.

you need to get behind inner cv joint where it goes into diff with a heavy
screw driver/pry bar to pop it out.keeping joint centered with one screw
driver while pushing out with another usaully helps. a drain pan is good to
have here as the fluid will drain out

thanks for all the help guys got both boots changed everything went well once I knew what I was looking for only problem I ran into was on the passenger side it did not have a removable sensor and before I could get the hub wired up I dropped it and the two wires that go into the hub pulled out , apparently they are the ABS sensor wires because now my ABS lite stays on in the dash, but I do appriciate all the help.

The ABS sensor is part of the hub assembly, it is not serviced separately. That's why you needed to disconnect it and unbolt the sensor wire bracket from the upper control arm. Oops. ;) Glad you got her fixed up, and thanks for posting back!
