Hello,

Next project is a Heller kit: YAMAHA TY125 Trial bike at 1:8 scale.

The real thing:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/yamaha_TY_125_0.jpg

Engine is glued together, wheels cut off and the hubs are drilled for insect pins.
Will make a jig to drill and assemble the wheel with the spokes.
Engine will be bolted to the frame to be able to build the complete engine and detail it out of the frame.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/rear_wheel_01.jpg

First try on rear sprocket went wrong, too much rpm and too little feedrate on my DIY CNC router:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/sprocket_01.jpg

The handlebar will be attached with 0.9mm screws:

Update will follow as there is some progress

Some progress, made jig for the wheel assembly and routed new sprocket:

Some little progress again.

Bent the handlebar from 2,5mm welding material:

Also testfitting the spokes and a nibble on the jig:

Next i will need to paint the hubs and the rims and start to actuallu put them together.

Looks cool so far, clean working style, I like that

Hello jylhami!
Very nice work!
What do you use for the spokes?

Hi, Uli.

Thanks !

The spokes are 0,4mm stainless steel insect pins, that took long time to find a right model. Finally find them literally from the other side of the globe: Ento supplies, Australia. http://www.entosupplies.com.au/

Very nice work! I managed to get variously sized insect pins from a company in the UK, but have long since lost their address!:crying:

Out of interest, are you going to use the engineers pens for the spoke nipples? That will be expensive!

Minimeca make very small diameter stainless steel tubes - I think they're Switzerland based, if that helps? Some of their tubes are around 10mm long, so you can cut two, or three, 1/6th spoke ends from each one.

Good luck, it's looking good already!

I just got a link from fellow modeller in Finland. A UK based company to supply insect pins: http://www.watdon.co.uk/the-naturalists/acatalog/Pins.html

Thanks for the link for the insect pins.
I was also searching for the metal head type.
In Germany you only get the type with the nylon head.
Here is another source for steel tubes form Hobby Design
in various sizes:

I love the subject matter and your work is amazing. I look forward to more progress on this great project. Can't wait to see how the rims turn out.

Got the front fork shafts from old screwdriver:

Also got the front rim and hub painted with Gunze's Mr Metal aluminum and started the spoke work. Pictures coming later...

No the nibbes will be cut from injection needles (i have a friend who is a nurse, so no issue of spending money :))

Impressed, I like your building and kit chosing a lot. Not common to see this subject, so its more valuable. Im subscribed waiting to see a lot more.

Some progress, got (almost) the front wheel spoked tonight... i just ran out of the injection needles = nibbles

The tyres are not so good, finish is too glossy, already tried to rub it with steel spunge, but still too glossy.

Hello ,
the wheel looks very good, but I guess there are at least two spokes missing.
The tires are always a problem in Heller kits.
I noticed some shrinking and cracking up on some older car models.

Got the missing 3 nibbles to the front wheel:

And started to work on the rear wheel:

Hello jylhami!
How do you insert the spokes in the wheel?
First in the center hub and then in the rim?

Hello Uli,

I have made my own techniqe to build the wheel.
When i made the front wheel i first set the 10 inward bent spokes on the other side of the hub. Next i hold the rim and the hub in my hand and insert the spokes to the rim holes one by one. I rotated the hub to have a free passage for the spokes. Then i did the same thing for the other side.
Then it was time to insert the outward spokes for the other side of the hub. Now it was time to mount the wheel to the jig. Then i layed a spoke to it's right angle over the rim and cut it to be about 0,5mm too long to fit to the rim hole. Next i took a needle nose pliers and by bending the spoke i fit it in the rim. Then i install the nibble trough the rim and secure it with a drop of CA glue.

Takes a lot of time and patience, but i see no easy way to make it look realistic.

Maybe i will add some photos to show my technique.

Hope this helps, BR Mika

Got the rear wheel done, except for the tire valve cap that needs to be remade.

Long time since last update. Now i finally got some of the parts prepared for paintjob:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/runko.jpg

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/moottori.jpg

Engine was first painted aluminum, then a layer of floorwax, and finally a satin black on top. Then the black has been scrubbed off to simulate wear.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/putki.jpg

Added welding seams to the header and cut off the original outlet and installed a brass tube with thinner walls made by drilling the inner dia. a bit bigger.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/lokarit.jpg

Mudguards also got a paintlayer. Paint was scrubbed matt to simulate white plastic. I used automotive wax for scratch removal on fullsize cars.

More to follow :)

Excellent job on the wheels... what did you use for the nibble and (if metal) how did you cut them ?

jylhami
12-05-2011, 05:54 AM
Hi Andrew,

The nibbles are from injection needles and i cut them with dremel cutting wheel. When i got 1 cut, i used a diamond file to even up the needle end, then cut the next etc. The unfiled end wet outside the rim.

The must phase on a MC kit: testfitting the main components together

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/sivukuva.jpg

The frame and the motor got a really easy wash with black oilpaint.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/sivuiso.jpg

Now the motor will have the missing electrical cables and clutch lever, then itīs ready to be bolted to the frame.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jylhami/mallit/ty125/etusivu.jpg

The front struts are cut from a screwdriver shaft, that had a right diameter, works ten times better than painted plastic IMHO.

More to follow :)
