My car (http://www.autoboardz.com/2002-pontiac-grand-prix-se-spedometer-exceloration-prob-ftopict251535.html#) ran pretty well with some problems here and there but about a week ago i got it my car it started fine backed it out and drove it down the street i looked at my spedometer and it was goin crazy first to 40 then 20 then 0 back to 40 when i tried to give it some gas the rpms went really high and the car jumped into next gear. And kept bucking when i accelerate. At first it seemed like a tranny problem but after i drove it for a bit that day the problem went away and was gone for about 4 days when i woke up again it started the same thing. But the first day it was doing this it rained for like 5 days straight so i thought i had water in my fuel or something but the second time it was really cold in the morning when i started it. Im thinking my fuel filter might have a clog in it but im not sure??? Thanks

Welcome to AF.

Whats your current mileage? Check into a clogged CAT converter. And it doesn't hurt to replace the fuel filter.

2001-2002 GP models had CAT converter issues and GM extended the warranty mainly only GPs with the SII 3800 V6 engine but some 3100 V6 owners on this forum got it covered. 10 years or 120K miles whichever comes first.

See thread below.

Thanks and my car is a 3.1 v6 with 121,7XX miles on it. If i change the fuel filter and the problem keeps occurring should i take it to a mechanic and have them verify its the CAT converter then call GM or should i just go straight to GM?
