1996 Explorer with blower motor issues

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition with automatic temperature controls. For the past couple of months the fan only worked on high. Which I didnt mind as this is my beat around vehicle. But now the fan has totally quit working. I heard this is caused by the blower motor resistor on manual temperature controls. But is this the same problem on a automatic temperature controls and if so does anyone know that part number and location. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have no defrost as it is now. Again thanks for all the help in advance.

The Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) does not use the standard blower motor resistor. It instead uses a solid state motor controller with PWM and a transistor to adjust fan speed. If you're lucky, the problem will be a faulty blower motor. Maybe it required the full current of high speed to get it going earlier and now it's completely shot. If you're not so luck, you're probably looking at a whole new EATC unit. I'm not sure if the 1996 has a separate motor controller or if it's like my 1993 SHO was, which was all integrated in to the $280 control head.

Wow my luck I won't be lucky. Can you just hot wire the blower motor to check it or is there a better way to do this.

I would consider a salvage yard for parts for better luck!

Thanks but I have already checked all of the local salvage yards and they said that they sell them as soon as they get them. But just to make sure I am asking for the right part. You guys are saying that I need the whole unit with display that is in the console Correct.

I may be wrong on that. I was expecting that the blower motor speed control is a function internal to the EATC head unit. I just took a look at the factory wiring diagram for the 1998 Explorer (I do not have the service manual for 1996) and even with the EATC there is a separate blower motor speed controller for the blower motor. The manual suggests the speed controller will be mounted near the blower motor.

You can unplug the speed controller and hard wire the blower motor. If the motor is okay it should run. You will want to have a fused wire lead though so you don't burn up the jumper wire in the event the blower motor provides a large current draw on the wire.

Ok I will try to test it as soon as I get a chance. I think the speed control that you are refrencing is in the same spot as where the blower motor resistor would go if it were a manual temperature control. Do you happen to have the part number for the speed control?

Just called the local Ford dealership and asked for a part number for the Blower Motor Speed Controller. They gave me the part no. F7SZ19E624BB. Does anyone know if this is correct? It cost $190 from the dealer.

I can't state for sure that it is the right part for your application, but that part is the blower motor controller for the EATC, not just a standard resistor set. I'm basing that conclusion off of the part number search from Fast Parts Network ( and from another forum (

I don't know how this may apply to your vehicle, but I had a similar issue with my Lincoln. My mechanic friend pulled the Blower Speed Control Module and re-soldered the board. He said it was a fairly common problem with them.

Just a thought.

Well I got it part of the way fixed finally. It turns out the blower motor was bad. It know works on high so that is good enough for me. Thanks to all of those who helped me with this issue.
