I've had a lot of people ask me about my drag cars and ask me why I never built a Pro Mod. More than anything I had so many NHRA cars I wanted to do, I never really paid much attention to them. After getting beat up for so long, I finally decided to try one. I picked up a handful of bodies from Slixx until I found one that made me smile. This is the Flashpoint Resins 70.5 Camaro. Dave S can probably correct me, but I think this is based off of a Cynergy Racing body. These cars run with either Nitrous systems or blowers and injectors. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, here is Rod Pearce's car built by Matheis Race Cars out in Missouri. This is a Nitrous car. mine will be blown, but so far I'm basing everything off of it. My chassis will be just like this one.

http://images18.fotki.com/v270/photos/8/174078/8783900/normal_000_0288-vi.jpg

http://images12.fotki.com/v539/photos/8/174078/8783900/normal_000_0289-vi.jpg

And here's the body with some clean up done. My plan is to get this one to go back together when finished. Doors that will open and close, and the hood that will go back on. I'd like to be able to show it all opened up or completely buttoned up, race ready.

Once I get the chassis done I'll start cutting it apart.

http://images53.fotki.com/v546/photos/8/174078/8783900/P6050169-vi.jpg

One of the first things I started working on was a new clutch can and Lenco transmission. These are two separate pieces, just tacked together. Both were machined on both the lathe and the mill. This will get a lot more stuff added to it as things progress. You can also see a small start to the completely scratch built chassis.

http://images12.fotki.com/v539/photos/8/174078/8783900/P6050175-vi.jpg

And here's my favorite part so far. My first set of machined wheels. After a lot of coaching from my buddy Dave Sherman and a lot of cheerleading, I was able to produce an almost matching set of rear wheels, wheel centers, and bead locks. These will get some more bolt details once I get another order from Scale Hardware in. The bead locks took roughly 45 minutes each to make. The wheels probably took and hour to an hour and a half each, and the centers were probably another hour and a half each. Lots of labor, but man, you can't beat the results. Once installed in the slicks and detailed out, they should look really cool! Now I just gotta make the two fronts. ;D

http://images18.fotki.com/v329/photos/8/174078/8783900/P6050166-vi.jpg

I worked slowly on t he chassis, area by area until it started to come together. I still have a bit more to go. I need to finish the funny car cage, add all the tabs and brackets, and a few more bars. But the bulk of it is done and fits the body really well.

http://images116.fotki.com/v1595/photos/8/174078/8783900/P6070186z-vi.jpg

I also got the rear end under way. The center section is a resin piece from TEM. I removed all their brackets and added my own PE ones mounted on aluminum tubing. I still need to add a few more tabs and this will be ready for paint.

Like I've said before, I really want to improve on my final product when it comes to these doorslammers. I want my doors to open and close with ease, and for the front clip to go on and off with no issues. I'd like to be able to have the car look complete, and then five seconds later be all opened up like they normally are.

I got back to the chassis first. Lots of test fitting, measuring and luck I was able to get the rear portion of the body mounted to the chassis and establish where my door pivots would be. Hinges were added to the chassis, and the connectors to the doors. I've got some mini magnets coming this week that I will embed in the doors so when they shut, they will be held tight. Until a bit of pressure to pop them open, then they will swing open nicely.

Here's how it's looking after two days of work.

http://images12.fotki.com/v203/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9190510s-vi.jpg

I've also been working on the rear suspension. Big thanks to the Shermanator here for helping me get it all sorted out. I was close but his help and photos really made the difference.

I scratch built a new wheelie bar from styrene and shot it with various Alclads. The rod ends are RB. The diff was painted and I machined up a new set of hubs/rotors as well as a new upper wishbone. It's actually still floating right now, but once everything is assembled, it will be mounted permanently.

http://images116.fotki.com/v716/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9190522s-vi.jpg

The chassis is almost complete too. All of the mounts are added, as well as a new sheet plastic firewall. Just a few more small things and it will be ready for paint and clear.

http://images12.fotki.com/v215/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9190512z-vi.jpg

I went with Tamiya TS38 Gunmetal for the chassis decanted it and shot the whole thing in two coats. Then one even coat of PPG clear.

I also made up the small tranny tunnel from K&S aluminum tubing and some Detail master #4 hard line. I need to paint the crimp tubes chassis color, then it can be installed.

I was out of town all weekend, but managed to have a pretty productive Sunday afternoon after I got back. Before I had left for the weekend, I had made up myself a simple jig to hold the chassis and rear end in place so I could hook up the 4 bar rear suspension without things moving all over the place on me. I marked center line and both axle lines on a thick sheet of sheet plastic then taped that to a ceramic tile.

I used plastic strip to get the chassis set at the proper ride height, and then set the chassis and rear end in place. The rear end was all hooked up with RB Motion 1504 rod ends, and Scale Hardware bolts. I still need to add all the nuts to the other side as well as some PE nut and bolt details. Even with the jig the process of hooking all this up is still like juggling a handful of worms. I was happy to finally get all four bars on as well as the wishbone and wheelie bars.

Here's the jig.

http://images56.fotki.com/v773/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260542z-vi.jpg

And with everything in place and the rear end hooked up. Still need to finish the rear sway bar, rear coil overs, and brakes.

http://images57.fotki.com/v66/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260544z-vi.jpg

http://images16.fotki.com/v316/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260546z-vi.jpg

Here's the small tab the holds the front end in place. I've also got my front end all plotted out and will get to that soon.

http://images56.fotki.com/v773/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260547z-vi.jpg

With the slicks on and the body pinned in place, I wanted to get an idea of how my stance ended up. It's a bit lower than I wanted, but I don't think it hurts anything. I could always switch to Pegasus slicks to get the rear a touch higher if I want.

http://images17.fotki.com/v63/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260535z-vi.jpg

http://images54.fotki.com/v459/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9260536z-vi.jpg

And the thing I'm most proud of for today. :) With my buddy Dave Sherman coaching, I attempted a new challenge I've never even thought about before. Machining my own engine. Here's the block after about three hours of machining time. I haven't done any clean of or fine tuning yet. This is right off the mill. Once I get a package from Dave this week, I'm going to get started on the heads, valve covers and manifold. I made a few small errors, but nothing that will be seen after more stuff gets added. I'm still in shock that this thing actually came off of my machine. But it's all a credit to Sherline machines, and Dave's outstanding knowledge and advice. So thanks Dude!

And finally, here's how things are sitting at the moment. Still a huge amount of work to go. But it's starting to look like a Pro Mod!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the engine painted and plumbed. That's some very impressive work.

Thank you very much for the replies!

Last night was cylinder head night. I laid these out side by side and did as much as I could without moving them. Then I flipped the aluminum chunk on it's side and did the exhaust ports. Once those were finished I flipped it back over and parted them off. I still need to drill the fuel line holes in the back, but these are pretty well ready. A quick mock up just for fun. ;)

Still plugging away! I decided I couldn't put it off any longer and finally got the wheel tubs out of the way. I tried plastic, but it wouldn't hold it's shape all the way across, so I went with some K&S sheet aluminum for the round part, and .020 sheet plastic for the rest. These were such a pain to get fit in there right and stay together. But they are finally done! I need to do some more clean up on them, then it's paint, CF decals and a few coats of 2 part clear to make 'em shine.

http://images116.fotki.com/v716/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9290574z-vi.jpg

With those out of the way, I got back to my engine work. I had started the valve covers a few days ago and had to take a break. They were starting to stress me out. So I came back the next day with some fresh eyes and finished them off with no trouble. I still can't decide if I want to paint them, or finish polishing the tool marks out and leave them bare. I need to get my manifold done next, t hen I'll worry about it.

http://images116.fotki.com/v693/photos/8/174078/8783900/P9290569z-vi.jpg

As you can see, I also got the lower a-arms on. I went with RB 1503 rod ends for these. You can also see I had to do a bit of surgery. I have been worried all along my upper mounts were too far back. And once I got the lowers on it was obvious they needed changed. So off came the old ones, and a new set was built. I need to touch it up and it will all blend back in fine. The most important thing is now my front end is where it should be and I can get my struts machined and keep on keepin' on!

The all aluminum Hemi is still moving forward. I machined a new Moroso oil pan, new manifold, as well as an MSD mag and motor plate. The blower is from TEM, but most of it will get covered with the safety blanket. I also did probably my two favorite pieces so far, the upper and lower pulleys. The top one is one piece for strength. I did each pulley on the lathe first, then on the mill set at 90 degrees and milled each groove with a tiny ball end mill every 15 degrees. Very time consuming, but the look is worth it.

Here's where it's sitting now, and a few mock ups. It looks like it will fit in there fine, and even clears the hood.

The engine itself is.... absurd..... the alloy finish is so real, neat and sharp.
Your own parts are so good that now the casted compressor in the top of it don't looks appropriate, speaking of quality and realism, IMHO.

Impressive, motivating, pedagogical, amazing like we're used, may be a bit more any new time ;) BRAVO!

It will be OK, Gio. There will be a blower blanket that wraps around three sides of it. Not much of the actual blower will be seen in the end.

It may not look that much different than the last pics, but I've put a bunch more hours into the body.

I already had my doors fitting to the body really well. They opened and closed fine, everything was great there. The big issue was the front end. It needs to fit the front of the doors, clear the engine, and clear the front tires so it can slide over them and clear the blower at the same time. Plus mate up to the windshield frame cleanly.

I worked and worked to get it to fit the doors well. Finally did that, then it didn't fit somewhere else. So it was a constant back and forth battle of sanding and adding plastic until all the gaps worked out.

But now it fits the doors pretty well, clears the engine and front tires, and I even got the magnets mounted underneath so it will snap itself right in place. I'll probably add another set above the headers once they are installed.

Here's a few mock ups to show how it's sitting. Those front wheels probably won't be used. And I just set my MTS injector on there for now as well.

I really like this - must be something to do with all the chassis tubes! The use of small magnets to fit the body is outstanding - why haven't I seen this trick here before?! I'm wondering if I can retro-fit something similar to hold the bodywork on the 908...possibly not, but it's something I'll seriously consider next time.

Good stuff!

I've also started some of my interior detailing. I machined a new chute handle, as well as a battery disconnect handle. Both of those were then mounted on pivots on the chassis with RB Motion bolts. The chute handle was then hooked up to RB #1501 rod ends and Pro Tech black plug wire to complete them. I also added a hand brake handle from DM #4 hard line bent to shape and pivoted on the other side of the chassis.

I was hoping for lots of progress over the weekend, and I got my wish! Things were really clicking all weekend long. I took a few breaks to spend some time with the family. But if they were sleeping, I was on it!

I finished up the tranny and got it ready to be installed. I added the shifter pots, as well as a scratch built reverser. Before it was installed I finished the fuel shut off handle, and and added the brake linkage to the hand brake. Then the tranny and shield were installed for good.

http://images18.fotki.com/v60/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA170630z-vi.jpg

Out back I scratch built a new set of rear coil overs, and gave the rotors some carbon paint.

http://images12.fotki.com/v68/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA170634z-vi.jpg

Moving back the front, I added a rack from the 55 Shoebox kit with RB tie rods and some machined steering arms. I also machined and detailed a master cylinder and brake lines. I still need to add some caps to the master cylinder.

http://images107.fotki.com/v70/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA170628z-vi.jpg

With all that out of the way, I jumped back to the engine. I'm trying to work at an even pace in all areas so nothing gets too far behind. I added the upper and lower fuel lines and fittings. I also machined a new front plate and idler pulley up from and got the belt mocked up.

I think I've also finally got all my body work done and I'm ready for paint this week. things are just sitting loose at the moment, so things aren't exactly how they will be. Just a bit of mocking up to keep the fire burning!

One question however, how do you make the distribution belt? It is teethed, so I wonder how you do that?

Thank you very much guys! Still building away.......

I had decaled and cleared my tubs over the weekend. I got them polished out and installed. Added a few bolt heads to match pics I had seen. Once those were in, I added the drive shaft, and detailed and installed the seat. I had to add a bar under the seat to support it, but once the belly pan is on, you will never know it is there.

With the body on I was relieved to see that they still fit very well. Getting those tubs on really made me feel like I was finally starting to get some where.

Here's the bottom of the belly pan. This will be installed at the very end. I'll add fasteners then as well.

Now I would like to add one last thought: this build is a clear example of CREATION process: the motivation > the ideas > ideas VS modelling limitations/techs > design, ideas application, troubleshooting, manufacturing....

... only for modeler's gods.. you sure are inspired by one great of those!

I believe the blower belt came from MAS. Machined Aluminum Specialties. There are several out there. I think Detail Master has one, as well as SRP.

One thing I wanted to add was some aluminum rings around the injector hat openings. Morgan Lucas used to run something similar and I always thought it was cool.

I machined about six or seven and then picked the three that were the closest to the same thickness, cleaned them up, and glued them on. I think they really make the front of the injector "POP". My cross shaft is just sitting in there. I'll make sure it's straight when the time comes. ;)

http://images107.fotki.com/v67/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210684z-vi.jpg

http://images16.fotki.com/v316/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210686z-vi.jpg

Moving back to the interior, I built the small footrest/floor panel from scrap PE metal and MCG etch and got it installed. I also added the brake and clutch pedals. They are just aluminum tubing sleeved together, with #4 DM hard line for the shafts, and MCG etch pedal faces. Still need to make a "GO" pedal yet.

http://images110.fotki.com/v302/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210682z-vi.jpg

http://images16.fotki.com/v316/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210683z-vi.jpg

I also got started on my shifter post. The main part is styrene rod with some PE plates. Once I painted it I used push pins with some DM #1 fittings on the back side. Still need to do the other side yet with the junction boxes and fittings. (The hard part)

http://images54.fotki.com/v551/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210689z-vi.jpg

And a quick test fit to see how it's looking!

http://images116.fotki.com/v693/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA210680z-vi.jpg

Hopefully I can really knock some stuff off the to-do list this weekend!

We've got some paint! Spent most of the weekend messing with this. I've got a lot more planned, so it will look different than it does now. But this is my base. I started out with HoK Orion Silver for a base, then gave it five or six coats of the Scale Finishes Ferrari clear red, then I fogged some Nero Black in a few areas that I needed it. Oh, I also added some HoK mini rainbow flake over the silver before the red. You can see a few sparkles here and there.

I still have a lot of decal work to do, then I can clear it and polish it out. It looks a bit orange in some of these pics, but it's really a cool deep candy apple red.

Thanks guys.....the body will look a lot different when things are all done. I need to finish my decal art, then I can get to decaling and clearing.

Still chugging away on the engine. I scratch built a Waterman fuel pump, and a new Enderly barrel valve from plastic strip and rod, and got those painted and added. I had to turn an extension for the fuel pump as well. Once both of those were on there I could start adding all the fuel lines. I think I've got most of them on there! Also added the hold down straps, starter, and a few other small bits. It's to the point now where I think I can install it for good.

http://images41.fotki.com/v1305/photos/8/174078/8783900/PA260716z-vi.jpg

I also finished the master cylinder, steering shaft and installed the front brakes, lines and front tires. To give you an idea of the fit issues and closeness of some of these parts, I had to take out the top of my brake line for the blower to clear. Just taking out that much made the difference as to whether the engine fit or didn't. It's been like that through the whole car! No worries, you'll never see it once the engine is in for good.
