Steering Wheel Shudder in 2004 Camry

My 2004 Camry developed an intermitant shudder in the steering wheels at 75 K miles. It sometimes occurs when I am deaccelerating and using the brakes lightly.

I took my car to a mechanic friends house and we pulled the front wheels after the car had set for 20 minutes. A dial indicator was used to check rotor for run out
and the measurement was well within acceptable limits at .002 - .0025. Despite the time lag the rotors were very hot to the touch at 130+ degrees. Later measured directly after stopping at 150 degrees with IR Detector.

When the wheels were off we sprayed the caliphers slides with brake calipher cleaner.A sluggish calipher was considered as a possability.

The tires were replaced and balanced after the above inspection and the shudder remains. The car rides smoothly on the highway at 70MPH.

We are now considering other possibilities; This would include an intermittant power steering problem. an ABS System malfunction or the beginning of a CV joint failure.

Suggestions, thoughts or further trouble shooting or diagnostic tests are most welcome to find the source of this random problem.

It is always a good idea to state your problem in the subject line: much easier to spot the thread.

There is a TSB for 2004 Camry. If the car is under warranty they replace a master cylinder. By now your Camry most likely is out of warranty. So you probably have two choices: either live with it or replace it on your own.

Unless the problem is with something else.

Good luck,

Sam

Is the TSB about master cylinder replacement to correct a pad/rotor problem when the master cylinder doesn't release pressure completely? A attempted to edit and retitle the post but couldn't.

Does your generation have a steering shaft with a U-joint in it. If so, I would indpect it. This shaft wore very quickly and produced a lot vibration problems on the early generation 6 Camrys.

Also check for worn out suspension ball joints/bushings, and steering rack tie rod joints.
