what's heads got to do with tranny???

OK so I had to do a head gasket job on my 96 Tahoe and now it won't go into passing gear and and reverse isn't engaging all the way. I never touched the tranny So... what happened???
What does the heads have to do with the transmission??? PLEASE Help!!!
I did new plugs,and wires new dist. cap and rotor, and had to have a local shop timed it to get it right new O2 sensors.
It engine runs great, but it won't shift right now
Please help
