Had to ask about my transmission....

It has only been a few years since my wife had gotten her 99 Blazer which was a hand me down from her family. As far as I know, the transmission fluid and filter have never been changed and it has only 118K on it. Everyone has told me, over and over, that if it has never been done on the interval with which it is supposed to be changed, then leave it alone. It finally gave out this past week and it is having a rebuilt put in it as I write this. Does any of this make any sense to anyone?? I thought at least transmissions should last a little longer than this?? Or are they???

Without changing fluid and filter, you're lucky it lasted as long as it did! I service a fleet of vehicles with the 4L60E transmission, and with regular service, (fluid & filter change) every 30,000 miles, I consistently see around 300,000 miles before they need an overhaul. If you tow a trailer, install an external transmission cooler.

The advice you're getting is what caused the early failure. It makes as much sense as not changing the oil and filter in your engine, the end result is the same. If you want a transmission to last, you need to take care of it.

Now that is the advice that makes so much more sense!!! I bet you have more experience in your pinky than all the people I asked combined. Since you put it into something I could understand, via the oil comparison, well, that makes so much more sense to me. Yes, it was costly, and I am not going to lie, but it also is a learning experience. This is something I can pass to my son when he grows up, so he doesn't run his car into the ground. Being that it was a hand me down from my wife's family, it barely had anything done to it, including regular oil changes, so I had to take on the headache of trying to fix or figure everything out myself. I thank you very much for you and all who are on the forums, because this helps us that don't know as much as you do keep our cars on the road instead of the junk yards.:smokin:
