2001 Camry -I was driving 55 mph and all of a sudden I smelled gas, ck engine light came on and car died. Never had trouble before. Ideas?

Check first for a broken timing belt. With your model you can remove the oil cap and look down at the cam you can see, while you have someone inside the car turn the key and crank over the engine. Observe the cam. If it is not rotating, the timing belt is broken. If it is rotating, I would next try to determine if you have spark. (You already said you smelled gas.)

... and if the TB looks good find someone with a DRB scanner so you can read the fault code generating the CE light. Some parts stores will loan tools for a deposit. All else fails you can get a cheap code reader for $30. The code will provide a clue of where to start looking.
