Murcielago vs The Rest/Motortrend Shootout 2003

Well, I picked up the new Motortrend a little while ago and they have included their annual SPEED shootout. I have included a once over for those who are interested. I have scans of the pages, but I can never get anything to post right. I have not read it yet so I am going only by the included charts. So here goes. The participants were as follows:

Corvette ZO6
Viper SRT-10
575 Maranello F1
F-150 SVT Lightining (?? Don't even ask??)
Mustang SVT Cobra
Jag XKR
Murcielago
CL-55 (Why no SL55 instead???)
Lancer Evolution EVO (I know what your are thinking)
Mosler MR900 Photon (definitely the most controversial, car had straight cut race gears and cheater slicks, perhaps a bit unfair)

There were no GT3, GT2, Saleen S7, or Panoz Esperante because OEM's had none available.

The driver for all cars was Justin Bell from AMLS, Grand AM, SCCA WC as well as the son of the great Derrick Bell.

I've included the finishing places of all but times for those that finished equal or better than the Murcielago

Overall the Lambo performed very well. We all know it is a big car so will not always handle with some of the very agile and small cars EVO, 360, 911, etc. As I said I have not read it yet so I am not sure why there were no numbers for the F-150. Of course while perusing other forums who shall remain nameless, the age old argument was present. The Lambo and Ferrari are 150-180 grand more than "OUR" cars (you know who I am referring too). Ultimately the only car that is really out of place is the Mosler because it no more than a race car with plates. I will say next year this should be even more interesting with the addtion of the Gallardo, GT3, 360 Strasdale, Zonda, Enzo, Carrera GT, or maybe this is just wishfull thinking. My bets are still on the Mclaren though.

Enjoy . . .:D :D

Nice post.. Thanks Raven

I like this part

>>Standing Mile
>>MT900 30.4@154.3mph
>>Murci 30.5@169.2

Interesting that the MT900 has the Lambo beat for the first mile. If the strait race is longer than that the Lambo smokes past.

Yea, thanks Raven! Now I've gotta hit up the store to buy the issue, its always the one Motor Trend I look forward to. I can't believe they included the lightning.

I know, isn't that awsome. That really says alot for the Murci. I am not mistaken the MT900, depending on what model you purchase, can weigh as little as 1900-2100lbs. We all know that the Lambo weights quite a bit more and still manages to compete. And does it with much more comfort and less effort than ever before. Justin Bell is quoted in the mag saying that Lamborghini has really done their homework on this car.:D

Yeah, I thought it was strange to include one lone truck. Not that I doubt the lightening because it is one fast truck, but it is still a truck. I think they mentioned that they were eventually going to try and do a truck/SUV performance shootout in the future with the likes of I would imagine the ML55, X5 4.6is, Cayenn(spelling), etc. That should be interesting.

Here is the website Menu. It is basically an American made exotic powered by a Chevy LS6 based engine. A very interesting car to say the least. They basically street legal race cars, kind of "ruff around the edges" but do perform. They are currently raced in Grand AM, JGTC, and maybe in Europe as well.

It really looks like a mix of a Saleen S7 and a Corvette... It's pretty nice but not too original...

If you guys saw MT Tv featuring the MT 900, it's as fast as the mag says, the car also looks incredibly sexy when in motion, and standing still which is never for more than a few seconds.

Personally, I like the Mosler, a great performing car. Although it does look a bit "kit carrish". Hell what is there not to like. Proven chasis, and even more proven engine.:)

Though I don't want to get into that cost argument and what not, I'm pretty impressed with the fact that the Viper pretty much beat out whatever Ferrari it was competing against, even gave the Lamborghini a run on some of the events. Thats not bad at all for a car not even in the range of $100k+. Naturally that Lamborghini outaccelerated everything besides that crazy looking Mosler race car, I'd sure like to take that lambo for a spin. It's like hell on wheels.

I read this article last night, good read.
The mosler set a bunch of records and so did the viper.
The murci was an overall great performer (as you would expect).
They mentioned that they didn't include the sl55 because they had recently done an issue for it (sept 02 i think).
They couldnt get the gt3 as they are not in the US yet. And they wanted to get an enzo, but all the cars were sold already. the saleen s7 was on a movie shoot, "Porsche was renewing thier press fleet just as our party was taking place and wanted to play, but it had no hardware to loan" so no 911 turbo. Suburu STi was not on sale yet in the US. and the DB7 GT was also tied up.
They added the lightning because SVT asked them too (thats how i understand it)
It doesnt really say why they dont have any numbers on the ford. I think its cause SVT just wanted the top speed test.

They explained this in the article. The mosler hits an earodynamic wall at around 160ish. whereas the lambo is still running up the speed. They couldnt even hit the true top speed. they estimate that the murci and 575 would have hit 200 or just below had they had another mile of course.

This is my favorite . . . and I quote:

"Also noticethe Murcielago and the Viper would've sucked both scissor doors off the Mosler as they went by it just .1 second later, but between 13 and 15 mph faster.":D
