1976 Broadspeed Racing Jaguar XJ-12 Coupe

This is my in progress scrachtbuilt Broadspeed Jaguar XJ12 competition coupe in 1/25 scale, is a long way to go in the bodywork, a LOT of blending, putty, sanding and shaping still ahead but I think the basic shape is there, not perfect but I like the result, this is what I call "the dirty stage" in which all the things are been added and then blended to the body.

The interior is next and that will also have to be made from the ground up, the main part will be the right hand dash and central tunnel, this will be a curbside model so no chassis/engine detail will be present in the final model, the tires and wheels are provisionals modifications until I find something more in tune with the original car.....but maybe I will leave these with some rework.

I would also like to make some day the New Avenger "Steed green Jaguar".....but the front end is a little different than the Broadspeed coupe...and making another body from scracht is not going to happen:biggrin:

Hope you like it as much as I do, is not a "perfect" scale replica but it will be a nice addition to the racing collection of a car I have been wanting to build for a looooooong time.

The Jag looks amazing. What did you use for a base under all the mods?

I saw one of the Big cats at Brands Hatch a couple of weeks ago, it's an incredible looking car.

Nice job and great choice for a model. Worryingly, I saw these race at Brands over thirty years ago!!!:eek7:

Stuart and Cingster,

Thanks for the positive review on this project, greatly appreciated. I wish I had the luck to see one of these Racing XJ racing specials in person, if in pictures they look super impresive...can't imagine one in the "flesh".

The "base body" used for the Jaguar is a AMT models 1970 Dodge Super-Bee....you can still see in the model the side "vent" molding under the back side window which still need to be filled, the body was heavily cut, bend, laminated etc. the central roof (purple color) came from a 1971 Monogram Barracuda and the A and C pillars where formed from plastic sheet and then laminated/blended with epoxy modeling putty. The hood area is a compleat plastic sheet lamination work and is still in progress.

The wheels fender extensions are plastic sheet heated over a flame and press against a balsa shaped form, then cut, sanded and glued.....now they need to be "blended" to the body of the car.

Today I put the first coat of primer to see the imperfections and it was there that the body look even more like a XJ-12!!!.

Will post a little update tomorrow.

Thanks for the links, I found those some time ago when I was looking for info. to build this car. Is funny, there seem to be quite a lack of pictures of the inside of the real racing XJ-12, most of the photos are of clones/replicas...of very high quality and craftmanship...but with a lot of moder elements/details not found in the real/original works cars.

I haven't make my mind yet, at first wanted to do the second one which looks fantastic, but have to admit that this version is also quite attractive and impresive!!!

A little update on the Jag project.

Put a light coat of primer to see all the imperfections and other areas that still need putty or sanding...and by the pictures you can see there a LOT of them to be corrected, but is slowly getting there. The side "vent" found on the donor Super-Bee model now have a plastic plug, but still needs putty to blended with the rest of the body.

Modified a AMT Porschr Martini 935 back wheel with a Fujimi BBS center(like front wheels), which was cut and sanded to diameter to fit the AMT wheel, now the car...in my opinion looks much better than the previus photos posted with smaller back wheels/tires, still don't know if will scrachtbuilt the appropiate five spoke wheels found in the real car, to be honest I like the look of the BBS wheels....will see in the end!!

The back spoiler and bumper where fabricated from styrene stock and still needs work, working now in the interior, the roll cage is almost done it just need two more tubes added to the back, the dash was made from plastic card and used the Super-Bee kit part as a fundation again. The froor stamping/detail is next and in here a little "artistic licence" will be taken since finding actual references on the real car is quite hard...let alone this parts!!!

Again this is by no means a 100% accurate scale replica BUT I am very happy with the results so far.

the slope of the rear boot area looks a bit too severe compared to the drawings

http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprints-depot-restricted/cars/jaguar/jaguar_xj12c_1976-24256.jpg.

I think it makes the car lose some of the elegance of the cigar shape from front to rear.
It's also looking a bit too short, again losing some of the character due it being somewhat "stumpy".

Anyways, good luck.

Thanks for your comments and opinion, greatly appreciated.

The drawings you posted and a fellow forum member was kind to e-mail to me some months ago, are not very accurate, in particular car(004)detail and dimensions...in fact if you look at the roofline on those drawings you will see a little deviation from the real car actual roofline style, also the front spoiler is different in the "004" car it call "as raced" in my very PERSONAL opinion the dimensions of the car in those drawings are to long in lenght.

Again as I said before my model is not perfect or pretend to be, the important thing is that I like it and am happy:rofl:

LOL! Is that a door seal I see before me? :naughty:

Probably not the best period for Jag quality, however, is it just me, or does anyone else have a desire to have one of these as a road car!!!!

The Broadspeed version I mean!

Thanks for the road car pictures, I have on file the Broadspeed "poster" picture for some time now, in fact in that picture you can see that the back part of the car looks shorter because of the wheels extension arches to acomodate the wider tires, the back bumper is shorter because of that...but in the drawing it looks to long...again in my very personal opinion. I hope some day a master modeler/resin company make a proper scale model of this car in 1/25 scale....I will buy at least 3 of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....for now I have to content myself with my flawed model:rofl:

The Jaguar XJ12 coupe road cars was beautiful but unfortunately they where VERY prone to rust and "other" problems, but Jaguar always have that beautiful look to it, have to love it!!

What an interesting subject. All your scratchbuilding is amazing, especially the interior. Wow.

A little update on this project, made the back wheels inserts from plastic sheet and sprue and covered the white rims in bare metal foil, modified the front wheels from a Supra Tamiya kit and put in the top trunk area a plastic/putty laminate sheets for the "curbed" lid look also opened the two holes for the race fuel ports, and a LOT of sanding and checking to take out as much imperfections in the bodywork putty/laminated panels fabrication, again is not a perfect spot on replica but I still like the result very much. Please not that nothing is glued or fixed in the model, these are test shoots to see how things are coming along.

Finished the interior fabrication and detailing, will post the photos of it painted in a couple of days. The XJS-12 Hasegawa model will eventualy be transformed in the "Group 44" widebody Jaguar racer....after the XJC....I hope!!!

That looks really nice. You should repop it. It would be a shame if you did not make a few copies!!!. The Group 44 XKE would be another nice one to do.

Thanks, really appreciate your kind words.

Yes the Group 44 XKE is another future option and stunning racer....and have the fred-cady decals to make it to, also the famous lowdrag Jaguar "Cut-7" is another vintage race Jag. that one would love to do, unfortunately I never got the 1/24 resin kit/body of the silver lowdrag XKE another variant of the lowdrags studys, that's the one that crashed, was destroyed and now have been compleatly restored using the original chassis and some parts!!!

Yes is indeed quite an impresive car(and I have only seen it in pictures!!), and have been told that is equaly impresive in it's racing engine sound.

Wow, this is just amazing. The interior, wheels, all the work that you put into that body....excellent.
I plan on doing one of these too, but I would never consider scratch building the body like that....plan to use an old Polistil 1/25 XJ6 sedan diecast as a base. Currently making a Hasegawa Group 44 XJS myself.
Well done and please keep the updates coming!

Thanks for the kind words about this project, the interior is already finished/painted and detailed. The body is also ready and have it's first two light coats of base white..two more to follow then maskin and the blue and red will be applied. I have enjoyed every minute of this project...even as a curbside one it was a little complicated but like the end result very much...in my VERY personal view and opinion of course!

I would have loved to have this body casted in resin and do the other Broadspeed XJC racer but every resin caster I contacted was not interested, saying it was not a popular subject of a car and would not have a good sale record to justified the mold/material investment....so in the end I just give up in my intent. Still I find this car quite beautiful and interesting in it's short racing history.

I will post photos as soon as I finish the project, thanks to all the forum members for their help, info and opinions, greatly appreciated!!

yes yes yes :D..I made a post some times ago about this car...then left the idea to make the leyland race car cause was hard to find the die cast polistil to start with (and quality was poor..too poor)
U are making a very cool model, never give up, also if not 100% correct (but who cares..it looks like the real....so 4 me its ok ;))

Good luck, very interesting thread

I have found a lot of pictures of these race cars in the internet, butnot much in particular interior, engine, trunk or chassis detail..so any new image will certanly be appreciated.

Hope to have my computer back and running for next week so a couple of new pictures of this project be posted by then...I HOPE!!

I assume someone ownes one of these race cars? So ask them to take some pictures and such of interior etc. I emailed Porsche and asked for some pictures awhile back of a 959 Racer that ran in Lemans #80 and they sent them . Can't hurt. really Love this project. But I am a Jaguar racing car fan. More pic's please and thanks for answering my email. Mike

Superb work so far, the Broadspeed Jag is one of my all time favourite 70's ETCC racer's! I have a Provence Moulage 1:43 1976 version to do and a 1:25 scale one is much more impressive! The version you are building with the rear boot spoiler is the 1977 version and these only ran with the blue sides as shown in the poster (except for perhaps during testing?).

The restored version that is racing now is a 1977 version with the 1976 decals I think.

I too have seen the restored car racing at Mallory Park recently and it was awesome! Unfortunately the original side exit exhausts are now only for show so we couldn't hear the orignal incredible noise but it still sounded fantastic!

I took plenty of photograph's, I will see what I have of the interior etc for you!

I notice the restored car is advertised for sale in the latest version of Motorsport magazine, you could buy the full size car!

Good luck, and keep it going!

You are right about Porsche, they help me with photos of the 917K some years ago and point me in the right direction to find even more info....at least the person at Porsche who responded my query back then, am still very greatfull for his/their help!

I have been a little sidetracked at the workbench lately, but will be posting a new update of this Jaguar project very soon, plan to have it ready to enter it in a local scale model exibition in about a month Thanks for your interest and kind words about this project, greatly appreciated.

This car looks so good....well all Jaguars do in my personal opinion, hope to some day be able to see this Broadspeed XJC in person!

Thanks for the kind words. You are correct about the year colors/paint job, also the front spoiler is a little different in design, I am painting in the blue sides 1977 version. Also repainted the wheels centers black since the gold ones where used in only a few times.

By the way, you should see the 1/43 scale super detailed model of this Broadspeed XJC using the AMR white metel kit been made by a French master modeler, it even have a scrachtbuilt engine....is mindblowing!!!!!!!!.....my big scale effort looks like a poor attemt at doing justice to this race car.

Hope to some day be able to see the real car, it truly an impresive machine.

I am on hollydays, if you want i can send you somes scans from CC magazine next week.

When i begin my jag, i learn your topic ... very good work

Jean Paul :)

Jean Paul, thanks for the info on the magazine article, I have that one...is a very nice article, hope some auto magazine do a similar or more detailed one of the 1977 car, it seems this car have some kind of lightweight "platform" over the back floor pan, something I saw in a very small picture of the car in the internet but not to clear to duplicate for me.

Your magnificent 1/43 Jaguar Broadspeed is a work of art indeed, can't wait to see more updates on it's progress, I suggest fellow modelers to visit the build thread of this superb build.

Fred

Any more pictures and could you or do you have any info on the exact mode to the Dodge body. I want a Resin of this so bad. Even if just the body and Hood. Why not do a Resin? thanks Mike

I almost forgot about this project of mine!!...I painted the body in the main colors and did some more work in the interior and put it in a box when I began "cleaning" my small work shop....started other projects and this got stored and forgot about it until now, I will look for it and post some pictures of it painted when I return from my holydays vacations.

I tried to find a resin caster to make some copies of the body for myself at the begining of this project, but none where interested or willing to do it, "not an interesting for production/cometcial success" as I was told by two resin casters......or maybe my work was not to the high standards for commercial manufacture, anyway now is to late to make body copies since is already painted.

Well sometimes it not so much the standards other people feel you should meet, but the pleasure it brings you. I think you did a great job, and look forward to more pictures. I know the feeling of starting projects and forgetting. I can't seem to get started back. Have good day Sir thanks Mike
