Hey guys, I'll move to the Rockies (colorado) soonish,
have never owned a car before and operate on a budget of about 2000$, the
now my questions:
- which makes should I look at?
- what milage is realistic to find for that money?
- do I really need a 4X4 in the mountains or will a two wheel drive do as well?
thanks!

With snow and ice on flat ground FWD works fine. When your goin up hill it doesn't work at all.
Try lookin for an early 90's Jeep. If you can find one in decent shape you should be fine for a while.
I just got one for my first car for right at $2,000. So far it seems well worth it.

Subarus are popular and plentiful here, you might consider one of those, and summer is the time to buy a 4x4

Gona have to go against that one, I don't see hardly any Subies. I will agree with the second part though.
